Quicken s account registers offer a standard way to enter all kinds of transactions. As the name suggests, these electronic account registers are similar to the paper checking account register that comes with your checks. There are several ways to open a banking account s register:

Downloaded and Scheduled Transactions The bottom half of the window
may display one of two tabs of information:
Downloaded Transactions displays a setup form for enabling Transaction Download or a list of transactions that have already been downloaded but not yet accepted into the account. I explain how to set up and work with the Transaction Download and Online Payment features in 6. Scheduled Bills & Deposits (see Figure 5-1) displays a list of upcoming, due, and overdue scheduled transactions. I tell you more about scheduled transactions in 7.
You can show or hide this information in the bottom half of the register window by clicking the small arrow button on the right end of the bar on which the tabs appear.
The Button Bar This window s button bar includes a number of buttons and menus you can use for working with transactions and changing the window s view:

Delete deletes the selected transaction. When you click this button, a dialog appears to confirm that you really do want to delete the transaction. Find displays the Quicken Find dialog, which you can use to search for transactions based on a variety of criteria. I explain how to search for transactions later in this chapter, in the section titled Searching for Transactions. Transfer displays the Record A Transfer Between Quicken Accounts dialog so you can create a transfer transaction. I tell you about this dialog later in this chapter, in the section titled Transferring Money. Reconcile enables you to reconcile the account. I tell you how to reconcile accounts in 8. Write Checks displays the Write Checks window, which you can use to write checks to be printed from Quicken. I explain how to write checks later in this chapter, in the section titled Writing Checks. Set Up Online displays the Quicken Account Setup dialog (shown earlier) so you can enable online account services, if they are available for the account. This only appears for checking, savings, and credit card accounts that are not set up for online account services. Update Now displays the Online Update For This Account dialog, which you can use to download transactions for the account. This button only appears for checking, savings, and credit card accounts that are set up for Transaction Download or Online Bill Pay. I explain how to complete online updates in 6. Update Balance displays the Update Account Balance dialog so you can update the balance of the account. This button only appears for cash accounts. I explain how to update an account balance later in this chapter. View displays a menu of options for filtering, sorting, and viewing the list of transactions. The One-Line Display command collapses register entries so only one line per transaction shows. Report displays a menu of reports that are available for the selected transaction. Use commands to generate reports from within the account register window. I tell you more about Quicken s reporting features in 9. Options displays a menu with options for setting register preferences and for toggling the display of the Downloaded Transactions and Scheduled Bills & Deposits tabs.
