If you re a brand-new Quicken user, a Welcome To Quicken 2009 dialog appears. You have two options.

I Am New To Quicken. When you select this option and click Next, Quicken displays a dialog with two options for naming your data file:
I Will Use The Default File Name And Location tells Quicken to name your data file QDATA and save it in a Quicken folder inside your user Documents folder. Click Next to create the file. I Want To Choose A Different File Name And Location displays the Create Quicken File dialog when you click Next. Use this dialog to enter a name and select a disk location for your Quicken data file. Click OK in the dialog to create the file.

Quicken displays the Select Your Data File dialog, which has three options:
Open A File Located On This Computer displays the Open Quicken File dialog, which you can use to select a file on your hard disk. After selecting and opening a file, continue following the instructions in the section titled Converting a Data File as Part of an Upgrade. Restore A Quicken Data File I ve Backed Up To CD Or Disk enables you to open a backup file for use with Quicken 2009. (This option works only with files you created using Quicken s Backup command, which is discussed in Appendix A.) When you select this option and click Next, Quicken displays the Restore Quicken File dialog to locate and open the file you want to restore. When restoration is complete, Quicken instructs you to open the data file from the File menu. Choose File | Open and use the Open Quicken File dialog to locate and open the data file. If a dialog appears telling you that you have to convert the data file, continue following the instructions in the section titled Converting a Data File as Part of an Upgrade. Start Over And Create A New Data File displays the Create Quicken File dialog, which you can use to enter a name for your new Quicken data file.
When you ve created your Quicken data file, the Overview screen of the Setup tab appears. It includes options and buttons that help you set up your Quicken data file to best meet your financial management needs and take advantage of Quicken s features. I explain how to use Setup screen options in 2. If you re following along and would like to set up your data file now, skip ahead to 2 and follow the instructions there. Then, to learn more about how Quicken works, read the section titled The Quicken Interface, later in this chapter.
Existing User Startup
If you upgraded from a previous version of Quicken, Quicken has probably found your existing Quicken data file. If so, when you first start Quicken, the Welcome to Quicken 2009 window offers three options for getting started:
Open The Data File Quicken Found displays the Convert Your Data dialog. Continue following instructions in the section titled Converting a Data File as Part of an Upgrade next. Open A Different Data File Than The One Listed Above displays the Select Your Data File dialog discussed earlier. Consult the section titled I Am Already A Quicken User for instructions on how to proceed.
