Delete enables you to delete the selected memorized payee. This does not remove any transactions from Quicken registers. Lock (a padlock icon) toggles the locked setting for the selected transaction. When locked, the payee s transaction will not be rememorized if you make any changes to it when you use it. Calendar (a calendar page icon) toggles the calendar setting for the selected transaction. When enabled, the payee s transaction will appear on the Calendar (refer to Figure 7-6).

One of my favorite Quicken features is the ability to tell Quicken about the bills, deposits, and other transactions that need to be made in the future especially the ones that happen on a regular basis. This Scheduled Transactions feature, when fully utilized, doesn t just prevent you from forgetting to pay bills; it can completely automate the transaction entry process. In this part of the chapter, I tell you more about scheduled transactions, including how to set up and use them.

One-time transactions are future transactions that you expect to record only once. For example, suppose you are arranging to purchase some furniture. You have already paid a deposit for the furniture and you know that the balance will be due at month-end, when the furniture is delivered. You can schedule that month-end payment in advance. Recurring transactions are transactions that occur periodically, on a regular basis. Many of your monthly bills are good examples: rent or mortgage payments, car payments, utility bills unfortunately, there are too many to list!

Scheduled transactions aren t only for payments. You could schedule transactions for incoming funds, too, such as an expected bonus or a monthly child-support check you receive. You can even schedule your paycheck but I recommend using Quicken s Paycheck Setup feature, which I discuss later in this chapter, to do that.

Quicken 2009 The Official Guide
time you spend entering transactions into Quicken. That s a good thing, right After all, you have better things to do with your time than punch numbers into a computer. Here are a few suggestions from a seasoned Quicken user (yours truly) about how you can make the most of the Scheduled Transactions feature. See how many you can use and how much time they can save you.
Set up all recurring transactions as scheduled transactions. Recurring payments are things like monthly and quarterly bills for rent, mortgage, insurance, utilities, and other regular bills. Recurring deposits are things like your paycheck, commissions, and other regular income. Set them all up, even if the amounts vary from one payment or deposit to the next. Not only does having these transactions set up in advance make them quick and easy to enter, but it enables you to take advantage of Quicken s budgeting and forecasting features, which I cover in 18. Use Paycheck Setup to track gross pay and deductions. Paycheck Setup may take a bit of time to set up, but it can save you a lot of time and effort while keeping close track of your gross pay and all deductions. This enables you to utilize Quicken s tax planning and reporting features, which I discuss in 20, without spending a lot of time entering data. Be sure to set up all paychecks for the people included in your Quicken data file normally you and, if you re married, your spouse. Let Quicken automatically enter transactions whenever possible. If Quicken
automatically enters transactions for you, entering recurring transactions is a real no-brainer. Quicken does all the entry work; all you do is make the payment or deposit. The only unfortunate thing about this option is that it works best with transactions that have the same amount each time they are made. Still, I m sure you ll find enough transactions to take advantage of this.
Use the Online Payment or check printing feature. Scheduled transactions seem to work best when coupled with either Quicken s Online Payment feature, which is covered in 6, or its check printing feature, which is covered in 5. (Of the two, I prefer Online Payment, for reasons I expound in 6.) Once the transaction is entered, Quicken can either automatically send payment instructions when you connect to your financial institution or automatically print checks for payments when you print all checks. So not only is Quicken entering the transaction details for you, but it s making the payments, too! (Ah, if only it could go out, get a job, and earn the money you spend so you don t have to.)
