miss any. If you simply enter all credit card transactions when you get your statement, reconciling to the statement really isn t necessary. When you begin the reconciliation process, Quicken displays either the Statement Summary dialog or the Reconcile Online Account dialog, depending on whether the credit card account has online account access features enabled. Both of these dialogs are shown next; they re similar to the ones that appear when you reconcile a bank account.

At the end of a reconciliation, Quicken displays a dialog that offers to create a reconciliation report. If you click Yes, the Reconciliation Report Setup dialog, shown here, appears. Set report options in the dialog and click the printer icon to print the report. I don t usually create reconciliation reports. I have enough paper filed away! But if your reconciliation required an adjusting entry, it might be a good idea to document it by printing a reconciliation report. You can then file the report with your bank statement and canceled checks.
Identifying Reconciled Items
As shown in the next illustration, Quicken uses the Clr column in an account register to identify items that either have cleared the bank or have been reconciled:
c indicates that the item has cleared the bank. You ll see a c in the Clr column beside items that you have checked off during a reconciliation if you have not completed the reconciliation. You ll also see a c beside items downloaded and accepted using Quicken s online account services feature, which I discuss in 6.
8 / Reconciling Your Accounts
R indicates that the item has been reconciled.
To make it even more obvious that a transaction either has cleared your financial institution or has been reconciled, reconciled transactions appear in gray print rather than black. You can see this in the next illustration, too.
To prevent errors in your account registers, do not edit transactions that have been reconciled.

t this point, you ll probably agree that entering financial information into Quicken Personal Finance Software is a great way to organize it. But sometimes organizing information isn t enough. Sometimes you need to see concise summaries of the information you entered, in the form of balances, activity reports, and graphs. Quicken s tabs provide the kind of information you re looking for, in the form of snapshots, reports, and graphs. In this chapter, I conclude my discussion of Quicken s Banking tab by telling you about the snapshots of information it offers in its subtabs and how you can take advantage of its Cash Flow alerts. I also explain how you can create, modify, and save standard and custom reports and graphs for all Quicken tabs.
