This chapter looks at some of the different ways you can create, visualize, and edit entity objects and investigates and explains some of the most common features and how to use them.
Understanding Entity Objects
When learning about new technologies, you may find it helpful to map these new ideas to more familiar concepts. Therefore, as a broad generalization, you can think of each entity object as mimicking a database table inside your application. Or, to be more precise, each instance of the entity object represents a database row. In nearly all cases, you can expect a one-to-one mapping between a database table and an entity object, with each column in the table represented by an entity object attribute. When you create an entity object, each of these attributes is created with a Java-friendly name derived from the column name. For example, the database column CUSTOMER_ID is mapped to the entity object attribute CustomerId. Each entity object attribute also maps a Java type to the underlying SQL data type, including length and precision, and automatically implements column constraints such as not null. The entity object acts as a cache for data queried from the database and provides functionality to operate on this data. So, for example, setting attribute values, validating data, creating new records, and deleting records are all functions of the entity object.
Managing Your Entity Objects
