Each attribute has a number of properties that control how that attribute behaves. Figure 5-3 shows the attribute properties for CreditLimit. Some of the more commonly used attribute properties are described next.

persistent This property indicates that the attribute is mapped to a column in the database. You can also have attributes that are not based on database columns, which are called transient attributes. Transient attributes can be useful for representing derived or calculated data. Mandatory This property indicates that the attribute is required. This is automatically set for

attributes based on database columns that have a not null constraint. However, even if the underlying column doesn t have a not null constraint, you might decide that for your application the attribute is mandatory. For example, you might decide that date of birth must be entered for a customer even though it is not mandatory in the underlying database. is automatically set for an attribute based on a database column defined as a primary key. If your underlying table does not have a primary key defined, JDeveloper will create one based on ROWID. New, or Never. For example, you might want to define that an order date is only updatable when creating a new record, and cannot be changed once that record has been created.

A useful feature of ADF Business Components is that you can define hints about how the entity object attributes should be displayed when they get bound to a page. For example, you can define what label will be used for an attribute or the format of a date field. These control hints are defined as part of the entity object, and when displayed on a page the properties of the UI component, such as the label, are automatically bound to the corresponding control hint. Of course, these are only hints, and as such you can override them when designing your UI.

5:
The Role of the Entity Object
NOTE Some control hints are not supported when rendered through ADF Faces. Refer to the JDeveloper documentation for the current list. Open the entity object editor for Customers, double-click an attribute, and in the Edit Attributes dialog select Control Hints. The following list describes the most commonly used hints.
Display Hint This hint defines whether the appropriate attribute should be displayed. This
might be useful if your business service has an attribute that you don t want to expose through the UI, such as a foreign key value that doesn t provide any detail to the end user.
Label Text This hint allows you to define a string that will be used for the label when rendering this attribute in a UI. Tooltip Text A tooltip is a short text string primarily used for help text. For an ADF Faces page, this string is rendered as a help balloon when you click inside or, in some cases, hover over a UI component. Format Type This property allows you to define how the data should be formatted for date and
numeric attributes. Valid values from the drop-down list are SimpleDate, Currency, and Number. For SimpleDate and Number, you can then define a format mask, but for Currency, the browser locale setting automatically controls the format mask. 27th of March 2010 with a format of dd-MMM-yyyy would be displayed as 27-Mar-2010 in a browser running with an English-language setting. NOTE A common mistake is to try to use an SQL date format. These format patterns, and the patterns for Number format type, are defined by the Java specification, and you can get a full list from the appropriate Java documentation.
Format For a format type of SimpleDate, you can define a date format mask. For example, the
TIp At this point you might want to define some control hints for your entity object attributes and test them through the ADF Business Component Browser.
