underlying entity object can be useful is for a list of static data used in validation or a list of values. Consider the CustomersView attribute MaritalStatus. The possible values for this field are static and can only ever be single, married, widowed, divorced, or separated. For this case you can create a view object based on a list of static data and then use this view object as the list of valid values. Select File | New and, from the New Gallery dialog, select ADF Business Components and then View Object. Enter a Name of MaritalStatusView and select Rows Populated at design time (Static List). Click Next. Click New to enter a new attribute. Enter Name MarriedStatus of type String and select Key Attribute. You can then add the possible values for the attribute and click Finish. This gives you a new read-only view object whose only data is five static strings. Later, in 9, this view object will be used to define the list of valid values for the MaritalStatus attribute. NOTe The strings you just entered as static values are stored in a translatable resource bundle, so you can easily translate them.

Most of the view objects created so far have a one-to-one mapping of a view object attribute to an entity object attribute. Let s take a closer look at these attributes. Open CustomersView in the view object editor and select the Attributes tab. Figure 6-2 shows the view object editor, which should look familiar, as it is very similar to the entity object editor. It shows a list of attributes for the view object, each of which has the same name and type as its underlying entity object attribute. Assuming that CustomersView is your application-specific view of a customer, you can decide which attributes are required in your application. For example, you may decide that for this application, when dealing with a customer, you don t plan on exposing the customer s address, CustAddress, or geographic reference data, CustGeoLocation. You can therefore remove these from your view of customers. NOTe By choosing to remove these attributes from the view object and not from the entity object, you are deciding that this data might still be used elsewhere in the application just not in CustomersView. Simply select each attribute and click the red cross button to remove the attributes from the view object.

For the most part, the view object attributes are based on entity object attributes, and that will generally be the case throughout this book. However, it is useful to know that view object attributes can also be based on an SQL expression or a calculation derived from other view object attributes. Later in this chapter you will see how to define a view object attribute whose value is based on a calculation.

Attribute Settings
Just like an entity object attribute, each view object attribute has a number of settings to control its behavior. From the view object editor for CustomersView, double-click an attribute to open the Edit Attribute dialog. Many of these properties, such as Updatable, perform the same function as in the entity object.
Control Hints
You discovered in the previous chapter that entity objects could define hints such as a label and date format for an attribute. The same functionality is also available in the view object. If you define control hints in the view object, they will override any control hints defined in the entity object. Double-click a view object attribute and select Control Hints to set control hints for this view object.
The View Object Query
When you define a view object through the various dialogs and editors in JDeveloper, what you are actually doing is instructing JDeveloper to construct a query that will be used to select data into your application. To demonstrate this, open the view object editor for CustomersView and select the Query tab.
Here you can see the select statement that JDeveloper has created; note the absence of CustAddress and CustGeoLocation, which were removed from the view object earlier.
