As you discovered in 13, ADF Controller takes care of application flow using named control flows between activities in a task flow. NOTe You might be wondering why a button has two properties for initiating an action: Action and ActionListener. Action is used for application navigation, whereas ActionListener is used for invoking an action that does not require navigation. Also, ActionListener is called before Action, since it makes sense for navigation to be the final action. If you wanted to initiate a method call and also navigate, then you could set both properties. Alternatively, use a method call activity in a task flow to initiate the method call as part of the navigation.
Buttons Calling a Method
The two cases outlined in the preceding two sections will cover most of your early learning requirements for initiating actions from buttons; however, there is one further case of which you may want to be aware. Consider the example where you want to perform some UI-specific processing on a page rather than calling a business method or page navigation. For example, if an order billing address is the same as the shipping address, then on clicking a button you want to copy values from the billing address field to the shipping address field. In this case, you can write some code to copy the values between fields using a Java class that is associated with the page and call that code from the button click. This code would be placed in a special Java class called a managed bean. Managed beans are covered in 15, but the outline of how to hook managed bean code to a button is as follows. After dropping a button onto your page, double-click the button. This displays the Bind Action Property dialog. Select Method Binding to indicate you want to bind to a method, and click New to create a new managed bean. Enter a Bean Name of myBean, a Class name of MyBean, and set Scope to request. This will create a managed bean for your UI-specific code that will be instantiated whenever the button is clicked. You can then define the name of a Method that will be called when the button is clicked. JDeveloper will set the Action property of the button to point to the method using an EL expression such as #{myBean.cb2_action}. Now, when you run the page, clicking this button will execute the method in the managed bean. TIp If you want to try a simple example, put a System.out.println("Hello world"); statement into the method. Then, when you run the page, you can confirm the method is being called by observing the message on the JDeveloper message window.
