Another example of where PPR can be useful is the case in which changing data in one field should force the update of data in another field. Earlier in the book you saw that for an order item, a line total could be calculated from the quantity multiplied by the price. If you create a page to allow the editing of an order item and then you change either the quantity or the price, you will notice that the line total is not recalculated until the page is submitted. In order to force the line total to be updated immediately, you have to set AutoSubmit to true on both the Quantity and Unit Price fields to force the immediate submission of the data changes. However, you also have to indicate that the Line Total field should update itself to

reflect the automatically submitted data. To do this, you need to set the property PartialTriggers on the Line Item field. This is a space-delimited list of the UI component identifiers that should trigger the refresh of the component. So in this case, the line total will be triggered by the update of either the Quantity or the Unit Price.

TIP The component identifiers are specified by the Id property of a UI component. The PartialTriggers property offers a dialog that you can use to select the UI component identifiers from the page hierarchy as an alternative to typing directly. Using this dialog ensures that if the target component is inside a container component, such as a Panel Collection, then that container component ID is also included. Now when the value of either the quantity or price is updated, the line total will automatically be refreshed without the user having to submit the whole page.

panel as a form with navigation buttons, JDeveloper will automatically set PPR on the binding executable. Figure 15-1 shows the binding for a page, and you can see that ChangeEventPolicy is set to ppr. This means that when the user clicks a navigation button, all components bound to that executable will be refreshed. So why does JDeveloper do that Well, let s assume you have a page displaying departments and their employees in a master/detail layout. As the user navigates through the employees data by clicking a button, only the fields that relate to that binding executable, in this case employees, will be refreshed and not the whole page. This is much more efficient than refreshing the whole page. But hold on. Didn t we say earlier that clicking a button submits a whole page Well, it does; but a button has a property called PartialSubmit. If PartialSubmit is set to true, as is done automatically in this case, then the page is submitted, but the only components that will be refreshed are those that either have their PartialTriggers property set to reference the button or are bound to the same executable with ChangeEventPolicy set to ppr. So the combination of PartialSubmit on the button and ChangeEventPolicy on the binding executable ensures that when the page is submitted, only specific components are refreshed.
