A gauge is a DVT component that can be used for visualizing a quantity within a range, such as stock levels, temperature, or speed. The gauge itself depicts a data value and various thresholds. So, for example, stock levels might be represented in a gauge component as a number, but the gauge might also give a visual indication of whether that value is above or below a certain threshold, like a stock reorder limit. Figure 16-4 shows the various gauge options, including a dial, status meter, and LED gauge.

However, what you would like to do is give the user a clear indication of whether the current stock levels are enough to fulfill the order. To do this, you will replace the text field TotalInStock with a gauge that shows the stock level and shows red if the stock level is below the quantity required. Since the gauge is displaying a single value, just like the output text field it replaced, you can use the same binding. Set the Value property of the gauge to #{row.TotalInStock}. NOTe At the time of writing, the current implementation is that if the gauge tries to display an attribute value that is null, then a default value of 63 is displayed. To work around this problem, you can make a slight change to the EL to check for a null value. If you set Value to #{empty row.TotalInStock 0 : row.TotalInStock } this will check whether the value of TotalInStock is empty. If it is, then the value 0 will be used. This is standard EL and demonstrates the flexibility of EL. You might want to fine-tune the look and feel of the gauge, such as setting ImageHeight and ImageWidth so that the gauge fits comfortably in the table row. Setting the Position property on the Metric Label component allows you to define where the data value appears. You may also choose to add a Number Format component and a Gauge Font component as child tags to the Metric Label component. The Number Format component allows you to set features like the scale and format of the number, while the Gauge Font component allows you to define font properties such as Name, Bold, and Italic.

Setting Gauge Threshold Values
You can run and test the page; however, the gauge doesn t yet give an indication of whether the value is above or below the threshold. To do this, you need to set the Threshold component. By default, the LED gauge is created with three of these threshold levels. In this example, set the first threshold s ThresholdMaxValue to #{row.Quantity.value} and select a color such as red as FillColor. This means that if the value is below the value of the current row s quantity, then the gauge will show a red alert. For the second threshold, set FillColor, maybe to green, but you don t have to explicitly set ThresholdMaxValue because this is the upper limit of the threshold. Since you are only indicating two threshold levels, you can delete the third threshold tag. Now when you run the page, the user can quickly ascertain if there is enough stock to fulfill the order item. If the gauge is showing green, then it can; if it is showing red, then there are not enough items in stock.
