The final DVT component example is the geographic map. This component allows spatial data, such as latitude and longitude, or an address, to be plotted on a map. At each point on the map, the component can show different information such as data values or even graphs. At the heart of this feature is the requirement for a map server, such as Oracle MapViewer, to serve up the maps on which the data will be plotted. The OE schema used in this book has spatial data as part of the Customers table. This is the attribute CustGeoLocation, which is an object type. This object type contains the spatial information for a customer s location, specifically the longitude and latitude. At the time of writing, the geographic map can t bind directly with this complex object type. However, there is a simple trick to flatten out the object into its simplest constituent types. You need to create two new transient attributes of type Number in the CustomersView view object and select Mapped to Column or SQL. You can now map each of these new attributes to an SQL expression. Set Expression to Customers.CUST_GEO_LOCATION.sdo_point.x and Customers.CUST_GEO_LOCATION.sdo_point.y respectively. This will allow the view object to use its SQL statement to select the flattened-out object type into two separate transient attributes. If you want, you can look at the view object query to see how this behavior is being implemented. Refresh the Data Controls panel and you will see these two extra attributes. The map can easily be bound to these simpler values.

You can also set Label, which will display a label for the point on the map, and Data, which will show information when the point is clicked. By default the map will be zoomed out to show the whole world; however, you can set the property AutoZoomThemeId to the value of ThemeId, which in the preceding case is mapPointTheme1. This will then cause the map to automatically scale to a level that will include all the data points.
Summary
The ADF Faces DVT components are a valuable aid in building rich applications. Using graphs, gauges, hierarchy viewers, and other components, complex data structures and relationships can be easily visualized. This chapter has introduced some of these components and explained how: Bar graphs can be used to plot data points against a series. Reference lines can be added to a bar graph. Pie graphs allow you to visualize data as a proportion. Gauges can be used to represent a data value within a range or against threshold limits. Hierarchical information can be shown using the ADF Faces hierarchy viewer. ADF Faces provides a component for plotting spatial information on a map.
