You can now click OK on the Create JSF Page Template dialog and get on with the job of designing the template. In this template, you want a Panel Accordion component in the left column containing two Show Detail Item components. In the top area of the template, you can add a company logo, and the remaining column in the panel splitter is for the main page content, as shown in Figure 17-2. Creating this layout is just like creating any other ADF Faces page, using layout containers, images, and other UI components. The only difference is when it comes to wiring up the facets and attributes.

Building a Reusable UI
First, you should set the panel splitter starting position to the appropriate attribute. To do this, select the Panel Splitter component and find the SplitterPosition property. Using the Expression Builder dialog, set SplitterPosition to #{attrs.splitterPos}. This defines that the value for this property will come from the template attribute splitterPos. So, a page designer would supply a value for splitterPos when they use this template.
You can also do the same for the Text property of each of the Show Detail Item components inside the Panel Accordion component. Again, this means that the text label for each of these panels will come from the template attribute, for which page designers supply a value when they use the template.
using a Page Template
Now that you have created a page template, the next step is to build pages based on that page template. Typically, you would package the page template into a library to be shared among your development team and you will find out more about this when looking at declarative components later in the chapter but for the moment, as long as the page template is in your project, you will be able to use it. When you create a JSF page, one of the options is to create a page based on a template. Selecting this option will create the page and automatically apply, by reference, the chosen template. When viewing the page in the visual page editor, you will immediately notice that some areas of the page are grayed out while others are not. The areas that are not grayed out are the facet

references that were created in the template. These are the areas on the page where content can be placed.
Defining Values for Template Attributes
You also defined that this page template has three attributes that could be set by the page designer using the template to allow the customization of the starting position of the panel splitter and the labels for the panel accordion. These attributes are presented as properties in the Property Inspector, so you need to select the template and open the Property Inspector. TIP It can be difficult to select the reference to the template from within the visual editor, in which case you should use the Structure window.

As shown, you can set these properties to a literal value, such as a splitterPos 200, or the property can reference a binding. In this case, acc1Label is bound to the customer s first name. NOTe Because the template is referenced, if the template changes, then the referencing page will change as well. You can test this by making a change to the template, saving it, and then refreshing the page that uses the template.
