You could place these packages in a directory on your system, and then use either rpm or a GUI RPM utility such as the redhat-config-packages tool to install it. Normally, you should always try to use the version of the RPM package set up for your Red Hat distribution; for instance, if you run Red Hat 7.2, it is best to download the software package designated for Red Hat 7.2 instead of downloading the same package for Red Hat 6.2. Packages for specific releases will be kept in the release directories. In many cases, attempting to install an RPM package meant for a different distribution may fail.

The redhat-config-packages tool provides an effective and easy-to-use interface for managing the Red Hat RPM packages provided by your Red Hat distribution, whether you installed from CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM, hard disk, or network. It runs on any window manager, including Gnome and KDE. You can access redhat-config-packages using the Packages icon in the System Settings window. This opens a Package Management window that initially displays a listing of package categories (see Figure 3-1). Most entries are preceded by a check box and have a Details link at the end. For example, to install web server software, you click to check the entry for Web Server. Critical package groups like the X Window System or basic printer support will have no check box, though you can click on the Detail button to add or remove extra packages for that group .

A package group is organized into standard (default) and extra packages. The standard packages will always be installed, whereas you can select which extra packages you want to install. You can remove standard packages later by uninstalling the entire package group, whereas extra packages can be removed individually. Installing and Uninstalling Packages
Use the check boxes to install and uninstall packages. To install an uninstalled package or remove an installed package, click its check box. When you have finished making your selections, close the window and return to the Package Management window, where you can select other software to install or uninstall. Once you have made all your selections, click the Update button. redhat-config-packages then prepares a list of packages to install. If you are using CD-ROMs instead of the DVD-ROM, you will be prompted to enter the appropriate CD-ROM.
TIP You can also install a particular RPM package directly. 3 First, display it with the file manager, and then double-click it. This invokes the redhat-config-packages tool, which installs the package. It also checks for dependent packages 3 and installs those as well.
