Once you have configured your printer with redhat-config-printer, it generates an entry for the print in CUPS. With Red Hat 9, redhat-config-printer now supports the CUPS printing server, instead of LPRng. Configurations are saved in CUPS printer configuration files, as described in the following CUPS section. When you start up redhat-config-printer, you are presented with a window that lists your installed printers (see Figure 8-1). To add a new printer, click the New button. The device is the port to which the printer is connected. For the first three parallel ports, these are lp0, lp1, and lp2. For serial ports, these are ttyS0, ttyS1, and ttyS2, and so on. In the Printer model dialog, you are presented with a drop-down menu of printer types. You first select the manufacturer, such as Canon or Apple, which then expands to a list of particular printer models. Choose the entry for your model. You will be notified that the printer configuration is about to be created. Click the Apply button. You then see your printer listed in the redhat-config-printer window. You are now ready to print.

Editing Printer Configurations
You can also edit a printer to change any settings. When you click the Edit button, a set of five tabbed panes are displayed for the printer name, queue type, queue options, driver, and driver options. For the queue selection, you can specify entries for the printer device and spool directory. You can also specify whether the printer is local or remotely connected through a Linux/Unix, Windows (SMB), Networked CUPS, or NetWare network, with a drop-down menu. For the queue options selection, you can specify printer features such as paper size and resolution. When you finish, click OK to close the window.

Configuring Network Printers
You can also use redhat-config-printer to set up a remote printer on Linux, Unix, Microsoft, Networked CUPS, or Novell networks. When you add a new printer, a pane is displayed with selections for whether this is a local, Networked CUPS, Unix (lpd share), Windows (SMB share), Novell (NCP queue), or JetDirect printer. (If you edit an existing printer, the queue panel displays a drop-down menu where you can select a remote entry.) A networked CUPS server panel displays entries for entering the server address and its queue directory. For a remote Linux or Unix printer, select Unix Printer (lpd share). This displays
