To see how Database Events scripting works, let s create two scripts: one will be create the database and populate it with records, fields, and data; the second script will read the data. Script 27-14 will create a database named cars and will have two records; each record will hold information about one car in three fields, say, make, model, and year. When the script is run, a file named cars.dbev will be created automatically on your desktop if it doesn t already exist; otherwise, the existing file will be used. First, note the use of variables for referencing database elements and the database object itself. The script starts by creating a new database and assigning it to the theDB variable. Later in the script, you refer to the database using this variable. Also, references to the records you create in the database are assigned to variables as they are created. The first record the script adds fields to is assigned to, and later referenced, using the variable theRecord. The second record isn t assigned a variable. Instead, it s referenced using its name in the script line tell record "Mercedes" of theDB. The last command in the script is the save command: save theDB. This line saves the changes to the cars.dbev database file on your desktop. The following script will get data from a single field from the database: tell application "Database Events" tell database "~/Desktop/cars.dbev" set carModel to value of field "Model" of record "Mercedes" end tell end tell carModel --> "300TD" Notice how you identify the database using a POSIX path to the existing database file. The ~ character is shorthand for the path to the current user s home folder, which Database Events understands. After you established a link with the database, you can go down the object hierarchy: database record field. Although Database Events doesn t provide any way to execute SQL commands, it supports the usual range of AppleScript reference forms, allowing you to perform basic database-style operations.
