Unlike application commands, scripting additions commands are always available, and you can use them anywhere in your script. AppleScript will automatically recognize all scripting addition defined keywords whenever you compile a script, as long as you have that scripting addition installed. For example, the following: display dialog "Hi there!" giving up after 60 will compile whether you put it outside or inside an application tell block. Unlike application commands, where each application is responsible only for handling the commands it defines in its own dictionary (plus a few standard ones such as run, open, quit, get, and set that it may or may not list), any application can handle scripting addition commands. How does that work Well, anytime you send a command to an application (including the one currently running your script), the application will first check to see whether it defines an application command handler to handle that command. If it doesn t find one, it checks to see whether there is a standard

addition that knows how to handle the command, and if there is, then it uses the scripting addition s handler instead. You can easily see this behavior in action. First create a new document in Script Editor, and then type the following: display dialog "Hi there!" Compile and run this script, and a dialog box will pop up in Script Editor saying Hi there! Now wrap the same command in an application tell block as follows: tell application "Finder" display dialog "Hi there!" end tell Now when you run this script, the Hi there! dialog box will appear in the Finder instead. This ability to send scripting addition commands to other applications can be useful at times; for example, if your script needs to bring an application to the front in order to work on it, you ll probably prefer that any confirmation, warning, Open and Save File dialog boxes, and so on, appear in front of that application, instead of bouncing the user back and forth between the application you re scripting and the application running your script each time.

Because scripting addition terminology is available throughout a script, this can sometimes lead to problems when both a scripting addition and a scriptable application use the same keyword to mean different things. If you try to use a scripting addition command inside the tell block of an application with conflicting terminology, this will often result in errors and other strange behaviors. For example, the Standard Additions scripting addition defines two commands, read and write, that are used to read and write files in AppleScript. Occasionally you will run into a scriptable application that also defines read and write keywords in its dictionary, using them to mean something else. FileMaker Pro is a good example of this: it defines read and write constant values for use in its access properties. This means the read and write keywords act as Standard Additions commands when used outside a tell application "FileMaker Pro"...end tell block and as FileMaker Pro values when used inside the tell block, where FileMaker Pro s dictionary definitions take precedence. If you try to compile the following script: tell application "FileMaker Pro" --some FileMaker Pro code write the_text to my_file --more FileMaker Pro code end tell AppleScript refuses to accept the write the_text to my_file line and gives you an error instead: Expected end of line but found identifier. The solution in these situations is to move the scripting addition command outside the application tell block where it will compile correctly: tell application "FileMaker Pro" --some FileMaker Pro code end tell write the_text to my_file tell application "FileMaker Pro" --more FileMaker Pro code end tell
