even that much intelligence has taken researchers decades and several keen insights to develop. At this rate, the lofty goal of mimicking human intelligence seems impossible. It can be interesting to introspect, to look inside our own mind and try to see how we make decisions. Looking at our intelligence from the inside provides special di culties since we are limited in our ability to sense our own thought processes. The part of our mind that is doing the thinking must have some additional mechanism behind it that we cannot see it is behind the scenes, running the system. Trying to work out the thought process from the outside has its own problems. We can analyze and hypothesize endlessly, design and execute experiments, but we only see the nal results of the opaque black-box that is our subject. We can t see the inner workings. New technology is helping to pry open this box, but it still limits us to seeing which corners of the brain are active during what activities. Like watching a machine and noting which gears are spinning during any given task. Illuminating in its own way, but still a long way from explaining how and why. At the other extreme, we have been taking the individual neurons that make up the brain and seeing what makes them tick. As early as the 1950s, with such work as A.L. Hodgkin and A.F. Huxley s analysis of the giant squid axon, we have had detailed models of how a neuron works. This bottom-up approach tries to determine how the larger structures of the brain behave using systems of these neurons. The hope is that the top-down approaches will eventually meet the bottom-up approaches somewhere in the middle, giving us a comprehensive model of the brain. There is also some hope that the brain is composed of many modules or layers, each of which is constructed similarly even though they may be applied to di erent tasks. Nature has a way of reusing designs. Simple re exive control is a tight control loop between input and output. Touch a hot stove and your nger registers immediate pain, and a neural re ex snatches your hand from the stove. The next layer up can take the pattern of sensory input and abstract it into the pattern for burning hot. There will have been a stream of sensory input before and after the burning. The eyes receive streams of information, patterns of dots that are abstracted into coherent shapes, which will in turn be constructed into familiar shapes, ultimately receiving labels like stove and red burner. Another layer can lay this sequence at and see the relationships over time the red burner combined with the motions that brought the hand into contact with it, and then the hard-wired pain. The next time red burner registers itself, a layer of intelligence can run forward in time, remembering

More complicated reactions look into the future and choose actions that lead to a desired outcome. It can make decisions. Hunting creatures, especially, need to predict the future. Where will the prey be in ve seconds How will this animal react to noise, to smell, to motion The better it is at predicting the future, the longer ahead it can plan. When the plan goes farther into the future than the prey s ability to look ahead, the hunter can a ect a capture. There is still something to be said for brute force, but why work hard when you can think ahead instead Another aspect of this ability to predict the future is the ability to model another creature s thought process. The predicting brain must not only record and be able to play back its own experience, but be able to act as a model of another brain to be able to predict its actions. You could argue that decision-making is a re ex of pattern matching coupled to speci c actions. The pattern matching is not tied to the here and now, but can match patterns predicted into the future. The hard-wired rewards and punishments provided by our bodies provide value determinations for these actions, enabling decision-making. It is highly unlikely that the brain, human or otherwise, is this simple.
