Enable/Disable name mangling of non-DOS format UNIX names into DOS 8.3 form. Enable/Disable case mangling of characters not of the default case. Designate an alternative mangle character. Specify individual file name translations. Each translation pair is enclosed in parentheses. Example. (*.HTML *HTM). Multiple translation sets can be defined by separating each parentheses-enclosed pair by a blank. Designates whether file names are case sensitive. Set default file case to upper or lower. New files are created using case passed by client or default case. New DOS 8.3 format files are created using case passed by client or default case. Remove trailing period from UNIX file names with no extension.

CRLF/LF Conversion
Another problem when translating file attributes between UNIX and DOS/Windows involves CRLF/LF conversion. Unfortunately there is no reliable way to determine which files need conversion and which do not. You cannot rely on file name extensions like TXT or DOC. Samba operates on the premise that files are not to be modified automatically to ensure that files are not mistakenly damaged by erroneous conversions. Note that some operating systems like Linux may automatically convert CD-ROM files based on file type. Use the conv=binary mount option to disable conversions for CDROM shares managed by Samba. Jim Barry has written an excellent drag-and-drop CRLF/LF converter for Windows called fixcrlf that can be used to convert files as needed. To covert a file just drag the file from Windows Explorer onto the fixcrlf icon. You can download a copy of fixcrlf from one of the Samba archive sites: ftp://samba.org/pub/samba /contributed/fixcrlf.zip
Locking
Sharing files in a distributed environment always involves locking mechanisms for serialization and notification of updates. Samba supports two basic types, DOS/Windows share mode locking and opportunistic locks (oplocks). Share mode locking is enabled by the share modes parameter. Share mode locking is

implemented using either shared memory (fast) or file locks (slow) because there is no general UNIX counterpart for share mode operations. Samba implements DENY_DOS, DENY_ALL, DENY_READ, DENY_WRITE, DENY_NONE, and DENY_FCB lock requests (Table 11.5). share modes = <yes, no> Table 11.5 Samba Share Modes
DENY_DOS
DOS compatibility mode. Additional opens by the same client are allowed. File compatibility mode. DENY_DOS open then set open to read/write. If first open client is writing then no other client reads are allowed. If first client is read-only, then additional client reads are allowed. All other open requests are denied. Write-only opens are allowed. Read- only opens are allowed. Additional open requests are allowed.
