For those more accustomed to the ease of use and error checking provided by a GUI configuration tool, Samba Version 2.x provides a Web-based configuration and administration tool aptly named the Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) (Figure 14.1). Being Web based, SWAT can be invoked from a remote networked workstation. This is a handy capability when you are administering a number of geographically disparate Samba servers or making those late-night configuration changes over a dialup link from the comfort of your home. SWAT provides HTML forms for the various section types represented in the smb.conf file (Figure 14.2). SWAT simplifies general configuration tasks and allows the system administrator to focus on the section definition of interest. Refer to 6 "Samba Configuration, smb.conf" and the swat (8) man page for details on installing and using SWAT.

Webmin is another Web-based tool for administering Samba configuration. It goes much further than SWAT by supporting a wide range of general UNIX administration tasks (Figure 14.3). Using Webmin you can configure Samba, set up user accounts, manage DNS, and administer file systems, Web servers and more. Webmin uses a set of Perl 5 CGI programs to update various UNIX configuration tables. The administrator interface requires browser support for forms, frames and Java. To obtain a copy of Webmin or additional information, visit the Webmin Web site: http://www.webmin.com/webmin/.

SMB2WWW
SMB2WWW is a tool that provides a Web interface to the Samba smbclient command. It presents a Network Neighborhood-like view of a workgroup or domain (Figure 14.4). Click on any server listed on the page and a list of available services is displayed. SMB2WWW allows you to do most of the operations provided by smbclient. This includes tar'ing a file share directory for backup and restore purposes. For more information try out the demo page or archive site listed below. http://us3.samba.org/samba/smb2www/index.html http://www.scintilla.utwente.nl/users/frank/smb2www/

Smbconftool
Smbconftool is another smb.conf editing tool. Unlike SWAT, smbconftool will preserve comments in smb.conf. However, you cannot enter comments. That capability will come in a future release. You can do most general configuration tasks like creating, updating, and removing share sections. Smbconftool is Java-based, so will require Java support in the browser. You can obtain a copy of smbconftool from: http://www.eatonweb.com/samba/.
Windows Tools bbSAT
The HP 3000 Channel Partner B+B Unternehmensberatung built a Windows-based GUI tool called bbSAT (Figure 14.5) for maintaining Samba configuration. This was done as part of the Samba port MPE/iX. bbSAT is freely available and will work with other Samba platforms. Like smbconftool, bbSAT will preserve smb.conf comments. There is also an enhanced version of bbSAT called "bbSAT (GE) Gold Edition" that provides additional - 191 -
functionality. For more information visit the bbSAT Web site: http://jazz.external.hp.com/src/samba/bbsat_index.html.

smbedit
smbedit is another free Win32 application for editing smb.conf from a Windows client (Figure 14.6). Along with general Samba configuration editing, you can also invoke Samba services like testparm and smbstatus. For more information see the smbedit Web page: http://us3.samba.org/samba/smbedit/readme.htm.

Other Tools smb-mode.el
For you Emacs aficionados, there is an Emacs major mode available for editing smb.conf called smb-mode.el. With smb-mode.el you can edit individual smb.conf sections, look up parameter information from the Samba man pages, perform parameter completion, and run a buffer through the Samba testparm command. To get a copy of smb-mode.el, look at the following Web site: http://users.gtn.net/fraserm/smbmode.html.
GSMB
Departing a bit from our focus on smb.conf editing tools, we note a Gtk tool for administering Samba smbpasswd encrypted password support called gsmb (Figure 14.7). It was created by Lauent Foucher. gsmb uses the Gtk 1.2.0 library. For more information visit the gsmb Web site: http://savage.iutblagnac.fr/projets/developpement/gsmb/.
