4 E-commerce is often associated with UNIX and Windows NT systems. What is overlooked is the fact that mainframes are integral to the e-commerce supply chain. Telephone companies, shipping companies, credit card companies, and banks all manage multiple mainframes supporting e-commerce. Mainframes are involved in online transactions before the customer clicks on a buy icon and until the product arrives on the customer s doorstep. If data is to be synonymous with business, then interconnecting open-system data storage with mainframe data storage is a primary role in the new economy. Interconnecting open-system and mainframe storage is not easy. Data structures, protocols, and architectures vary. Both environments are double-edged swords in relation to interoperability. Their strengths are often their weaknesses in the SAN environment. The nature of an open system is that it is open. The premise of the opensystem environment is that multiple vendors can build compatible products to interoperate with one another and allow customers to use common sets of applications and devices. Vendors may or may not develop compatibility products contingent on the market. It is staggering to think about the scope of open-system environments, where chips, processors, boards, interface cards, communications protocols, cabling, operating systems, infrastructure devices, and applications are essential. With thousands of vendors who develop, innovate, and deliver these products to the market, it is no wonder that open systems can be unreliable and unstable. Mainframes, on the other hand, are closed and proprietary by design. The mainframe environment is stable and reliable. Few vendors seem to control everything end to end. The mainframe world achieves superior reliability and performance because the operating systems, communications protocols, hardware, and system components are tightly integrated. What is done today to bridge the data storage gap between opensystem and mainframe storage In order to connect these two disparate worlds, companies have engineered around inefficiencies. There are technologies that enable data to be moved between open-system and mainframe storage. They do not always provide advanced functionality, intelligence, or management features. They are most always prohibitively slow. There are various ways mainframe and open-system data sets can be accessed today. ferred by all standard means including File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Network File System (NFS). Some vendors provide middleware to move and transform data between the two environments. There are devices that support SCSI, Fibre Channel, and Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON) interfaces. Most of these products have no intelligence and provide only physical connectivities. Use of storage subsystems in support of SCSI, Fibre Channel, and ESCON interfaces is another solution. Although a storage subsystem has software to perform data transformation, the system running the software is not integrated into the storage subsystem; it is actually a separate process. This causes latency and limitations regarding system functionality and integrity. Storage subsystems are vendor-dependent, which restricts your options. There are major problems with all these solutions. Each one requires host-based software to perform tasks. Host-based software solutions have proven to be slow and cumbersome; they have a severely negative impact on overall business productivity. Hosts are production systems, and additional processing affects their overall performance. Moving large amounts of data becomes impossible. Most of these solutions do not provide online presence in their data paths. To share data, the mainframe needs an active open new data path. This is done on a point-in-time basis and not continuously, which means that data are redundant on storage. Companies have moved today from gigabytes of stored data to terabytes of stored data. Predictions are that stored data soon will enter the petabyte range. The solutions mentioned previously offer very little intelligence, scalability, or robustness. They may achieve raw file transfer, but to move volumes of data, multiple simultaneous replications, online backups, and so on between platforms does not exist.
