4 Performance without intelligence offers limited solutions. An intelligent SAN gateway sits in the middle of the data path and interconnects with mainframe and open-system storage at interface and data levels. The SAN should be vendor-independent, and it should support multiple platforms. A shift in the dynamics of open-system and mainframe architectures creates bandwidth deployment issues. Open systems use few fat pipes, and mainframes use many thin pipes. On an open system, Fibre Channel can move data at a bandwidth of 1 Gb. ESCON supports approximately 17 Mb of bandwidth; this creates bottlenecks. An intelligent SAN gateway addresses these issues by funneling ESCON channels to create fatter pipes. This solution effectively takes ESCON channels to the creation of virtual channels and provides higher bandwidths. A SAN gateway is scalable and has the ability to add port and as much bandwidth as necessary. Fibre Connection (FICON) is available for mainframe storage. FICON provides benefits that include increased bandwidth. There are some major issues that FICON must resolve before full deployment is possible. Existing mainframe systems cannot upgrade to FICON, so companies put bridges in to connect ESCON and FICON. New mainframes have FICON channels installed automatically, but at this time there are no control units to support new interconnect technologies, which is unfortunate. SAN gateways require existing infrastructure support in adaptation to new technologies as they emerge. Responsibility needs to be removed from the host and the storage subsystems. It should be put on outboard systems. Proposed SAN gateways capable of moving large quantities of data and of acting on them in real time are necessary. To achieve this without affecting performance requires a great deal of energy; it can be achieved on a per-port basis with RISC processors. SAN placement is a crucial issue. The SAN should sit in the middle of the data path to intercept and interpret data as they transverse the open-system and mainframe environments. Placing the SAN gateway anywhere else will limit its ability to access and control data, reducing effectiveness.
