Startup MAN service providers enjoyed an accounting edge over established competitors. As traditional carriers continued to invest in more expensive SONET/SDH and ATM equipment, they virtually locked themselves into those technologies owing to depreciation schedules. A traditional carrier that wanted to build an all-Ethernet MAN would have to buy all new equipment and take a huge loss on its existing MAN infrastructure. The Ethernet MAN market had to be created by startups. Such a financial risk for traditional carriers would not have been a consideration. Many companies now are pursuing Ethernet in local loops, which will add to the explosion in bandwidth demand over carrier backbones, driving Ethernet further and further outside LANs. Enterprise networks that vastly outstrip WANs in terms of speed and residential markets are looking for similar speed boosts. With this kind of bandwidth demand focused on WANs, Ethernet MANs are being created swiftly to take advantage of the disparities. Ethernet MANs have simplicity, ease of implementation, and relatively low cost on their side. Once established in major metropolitan areas, linking geographically close cities is only a few lines of fiber away. Regional area networks that run entirely on Ethernet could be created; the Northeast, northern California, and southern California would be logical starting points. 10 Gb Ethernet could be an effective link between cities and, with multiplexing, could outstrip OC-768 rates. Once these regional area networks are established, the momentum could move to the next rung, nationwide links, and from there to intercontinental links.

Ethernet s transition into the WAN space is ensured if its simplicity and low cost are as significant in the WAN as they have been in the LAN and MAN. The WAN historically has dominated traditional carriers with a voice background. Networks operate much closer to maximum load limits, cables are expected to run hundreds of kilometers without problems, and pricey equipment is the norm in this environment.

4 Back when the 155 Mbps OC-3 SONET system could easily outpace both 10 Mbps Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, it seemed that traditional WAN carriers had strong justifications for their thinking. Now data traffic far outweighs voice traffic, and this discrepancy is only expected to grow. Data traffic does not require as much quality of service (QoS) as voice and video traffic. QoS is very dependent on how close traffic is running to the maximum load limit of the connection. In LAN thinking, it is time to get more bandwidth when you consistently see loads of 80 percent of the maximum available bandwidth across critical connections, usually in the backbone. In the LAN, extra bandwidth is relatively inexpensive and easy to add. In the WAN, bandwidth is expensive (1 Gbps of bandwidth in a WAN costs up to 10 times as much as its LAN equivalent), and installation is difficult. To provision a new network link, a network engineer must assess current capacity and reconfigure all cross-connects, adding and dropping multipliers along the route. This can take up to 60 days. Increasing SONET s scalability requires an upgrade for every device on the fiber route. SONET s main weakness is that it has trouble handling data traffic. SONET systems were designed before the explosion of data services and equipment supporting traditional voice telecommunications payloads. Therefore, SONET traffic, whether voice, data, or video, must fit a specific bandwidth slot. In the case of data, the transmission may or may not use full bandwidth allocation. When payloads must be extended, SONET s poor signal concatenation schemes do not allow for full use of the payload, and the payload s bandwidth slot is left mostly empty. SONET is strictly a transport technology and unaware of payload traffic. It cannot address data transport requirements efficiently. Figure 4-15 depicts a SAN over MAN architecture. This brings us to the WAN s major data transmission technology: ATM. Originally, ATM was considered the end-all solution for building a single topology across all networks. However, its complexity and high cost made it another victim of Ethernet in the LAN, and these same disadvantages could be its downfall in the WAN now that Ethernet has developed a competitive solution for that space. The main arguments for ATM s continued success is its ability to provide true QoS and easy provisioning.
