Last November, New York Life tackled the problem by implementing eight EMC Connectrix Fibre Channel switches, which provide anyto-any connectivity between the servers and Symmetrix devices. This has freed up captive storage capacity to feed the growing data needs of new servers and applications. The initial SAN installation consisted of two fabrics of four switches each. Earlier this year, in order to accommodate escalating traffic switching needs, the insurer added two switches to each fabric, for a total of 12. Servers are connected to both fabrics to ensure continuing availability if one fabric goes down.

The effect of the SAN on New York Life s storage costs has been significant and immediate. We haven t had to add a new Symmetrix box on our floor for a year, Polito declares. Before the SAN initiative, we faced a need to bring in three or four new Symmetrix boxes. Not having to buy those devices has saved us a couple of million dollars. In addition, it has become more manageable and less disruptive to attach new servers onto the SAN or put new DASD into existing Symmetrix frames. The SAN implementation has done more than save money on storage equipment costs, however. The Connectrix fabric also has become the foundation for several strategic initiatives aimed at reducing storage costs and ensuring reliability and performance levels on a proactive, ongoing basis.

Getting a handle on storage use and traffic patterns is a prerequisite to effectively maintaining the SAN infrastructure. However, this is no easy task in New York Life s complex SAN environment. For instance, while SANs make it possible to ensure better performance and fault tolerance for applications by distributing shared databases across multiple volumes, those capabilities also make it a lot more difficult to design applications. It isn t a discrete process. It s an ongoing evaluation process, Polito notes. The company s IT department wants to be able to comprehensively model storage demands and traffic patterns not only for individual applications and servers but also for the aggregate activity of all those servers going through all those switches. This will help storage managers make decisions such as which Connectrix ports to plug servers into, where to put additional servers, and how to optimize performance by understanding zone requirements. The goal is to identify and address bottlenecks such as those created when too many servers are funneled through one Connectrix

switch before performance degrades to the point where users start complaining. New York Life is still looking to avoid performance problems by finding modeling tools that can crunch data and determine the correct zoning for applications and servers. We re starting to see products from companies like Veritas and EMC, Polito comments. With SANs only a few years old, it s not surprising that the SAN management market has some growing up to do.
Analyzing Storage Needs
Polito s group also has been implementing a formal methodology for analyzing the current and projected storage needs of end users and in-house developers. We re actively working on a storage demand project, which will put an infrastructure in place to capture utilization and report back to business units on what they re using and the costs involved, he says. One goal of the project is to accurately tie the deployment of storage capacity more closely to real needs. When a user asks for 100 GB of storage, we ll ask, Do you need it right away, or is this a projected need over the next six months If an application s storage demands had been projected to grow 80 percent over this time period, and they only grew 3 percent, we re going to ask why, Polito states. Toward this end, IT hopes to institute a charge-back program for storage in the near future.
