When tape backup became too costly and time-consuming, Robbins turned to a company that was providing a useful alternative to tapebased systems. EVault, a provider of online data backup and disaster-recovery solutions, presented Robbins with a plan to transfer all of FMC s data to secure off-site vaults. This process known

as EVaulting was designed specifically to easily back up data at any preset time of the day and automatically and safely transfer them using the Internet. Once the data are secured, companies can easily and quickly access the data they need, performing a full restore in a matter of minutes rather than days. With EVault, we re able to back up data online every night, after the work day is over and no one else is around, says Robbins. Then, once we do need to retrieve information, we can access it online and get it back and fully restored in about a half-hour a far cry from the days when it would take 24 hours to get everything back in order. Robbins says that he is using EVault primarily to manage backups across a mixed Microsoft and Novell network in two locations Toronto and Ottawa. There are about 600 employees spread between the two of them, he says, which means a lot of data to manage. So far, so good. Robbins says he is happy with the time EVault has saved him and his colleagues. If you figure that FMC has a couple of million documents online and over 200 GB of data, you have to figure that some U.S. law firms hold substantially more, he declares. That s what makes EVault s online data backup so important for law firms. The true return on investment (ROI) here is the speed with which you can use EVault to recover data, regardless of how much information you are backing up. It s much, much faster and more reliable than tape.

6 In the ASP side of the business, clients can connect to TDS s network to access their data and applications, which are stored at the company s computer center one of the largest, most modern computer centers in Germany, with 530 servers. There are several powerful benefits: IT costs are transparent; initial investments in software licenses, hardware, and know-how become obsolete; and TDS continues to be the owner and license holder of the software used. Moreover, applications are managed efficiently from a central location, and users receive support that is tailored to their environment. The bottom line for clients: the opportunity to focus fully on their core business. However, with its ever-more-complex requirements and increased information flow not to mention the growth of its successful hosting business TDS realized last year that it needed a new solution for the use of data storage.
The Challenge: High-Availability Storage
It s our goal to utilize and pay for storage capacity in tune with our customers needs, says Thomas Gebhardt, TDS division manager for application hosting and a member of the top management team. In addition to ensuring high-availability storage capacity on demand, TDS insisted that any storage solution had to provide 7.2 TB of harddisk capacity. This level of storage is required for optimal performance, due to the structure and size of the SAP databases with which the company frequently works. After intensive market research, TDS opted for the concept of storage on demand. The conception, planning, design, and implementation of the storage system started in March 2001. The solutions offered are mostly very complex and require a high degree of investment, as well as expenditures for adaptation and integration, Gebhardt says. We chose storage on demand because this solution combines an optimal cost-benefit ratio, with highavailability storage capacity, easy integration into existing business processes, and more efficient adaptation into future requirements.
