system supports a minimum of 25,000 users, whereas NT supported 5,000. A.B. Watley Group keeps transactional data for 5 years, with each transaction running several hundred bytes. The other data chart, time, and sales data are kept for 30 days and then discarded. The company has data centers in Dallas and New York that complement each other and act as redundancy fail-overs. So far the company is happy with the performance, availability, and reliability of the Sun architecture. As it plans its upcoming SAN migration, the firm is establishing a solid foundation based on compatible technologies and hardware that can scale to meet its future needs.

On February 2, 2001, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) opened the doors to its new Technology Center in Colorado Springs, CO. It is the largest independent storage networking complex in the world. The function of the Technology Center is to provide a place where vendors and IT professionals can test storage interoperability. Testing the interoperability of large storage networking and server configurations is a main focus of the lab, says Thomas Conroy, director of the SNIA Technology Center. The Technology Center enables industry players to prove and demonstrate interoperable configurations, architectures, education, and services for complete and proven storage networking solutions. We want to build a knowledge base of information on networked storage solutions to help propel the industry into a higher value-add position, says Conroy. One example of how the Technology Center is going to deal with interoperability issues is events called plug fests. The purpose of these plug fests is to gather vendors in specific areas, such as IP storage, and have them use their various implementations of the technologies to see if the vendors products interoperate.

6 For educational purposes, the Technology Center is going to conduct workshops to teach the vendor and user communities about various standards and interoperability. These educational workgroups will be hands-on training in the labs and classrooms, says Conroy. To test the architectures, the Technology Center will have permanent configurations of new technologies in place that will be used to test interoperability. SNIA also plans to hold workgroup symposiums at the Technology Center four times a year. The workgroups will facilitate the study, development, and recommendation of storage standards for various standards bodies. According to SNIA, early adopters have found that while storage networking technology promises to be beneficial by reducing maintenance costs and providing greater data and application availability, it can be very difficult to implement. This is where the laboratory comes in. Its vision is to promote and accelerate the use of highly evolved, widely accepted storage network systems across the IT community and to solve real-world business problems. For end users, the laboratory promises access to a multivendor networked test facility in which they can test new storage architectures in complex, realistic production environments. There are main technology groups we want to explore in the Technology Center, says Donna Stever, chairperson of SNIA. A sample of these technology groups includes disk resource management, Fibre Channel management, storage media library management, and Common Information Manager (CIM) demo. The function of the Technology Center is to provide a place where people from these types of technology areas can come together and do work, says Stever. SNIA is also planning to use the Technology Center as a place to validate standards it is working on, such as extended copy, Fiber Alliance MIB, and Host Bus Adapter API. With more than 14,000 square feet, the state-of-the-art facility will include the following:
