Following are SAN-related terminology and organizations that you are likely to encounter. Refer to the Glossary at the end of this book for a complete list of common storage networking-related terms and their definitions. Directly attached storage (DAS) Previously, all mass storage devices (such as disk drives) were attached directly to the computer or were located inside the same box. Hence there was no need for a term describing this arrangement. Nowadays, since the technologies that enable storage networking have become more diverse, the term directly attached storage is used to describe those parts of a wider storage network in which this kind of local connection is still used. Direct Access File System (DAFS) The DAFS protocol is a new file access protocol specifically designed to take advantage of standard memory-to-memory interconnect technologies such as Virtual Interface (VI) architecture. DAFS enables applications to access network interface hardware without operating system intervention and carry out bulk data transfers directly to or from application buffers with minimal central processing unit (CPU) overhead. Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) This is an international organization of manufacturers, systems integrators, developers, systems vendors, industry professionals, and end users. Host bus adapter (HBA) An input-output (I/O) adapter that connects a host I/O bus to a computer s memory system. HBA is generally used in SCSI contexts. Just a bunch of disks (JBODs) A term used for a storage enclosure that is supplied with disk drives preintegrated.

3 The system s integrator can incorporate his or her own choice of RAID controller or just use the JBODs as an economic way to add more disk storage. Network-attached storage (NAS) A disk array that connects directly to the messaging network via a LAN interface such as Ethernet using common communications protocols. It functions as a storage appliance on the LAN. The NAS has an internal processor and an OS microkernelbased architecture and processes file I/O protocols such as Server Message Block (SMB) for NT and Network File System (NFS) for UNIX operating systems. Redundant array of independent disks (RAID) This is a family of techniques for managing multiple disks to deliver desirable cost, data availability, and performance characteristics to host environments. SAN-attached storage (SAS) This is a term used to refer to storage elements that connect directly to a SAN and provide file, database, block, or other types of data access services to computer systems. SAS elements that provide file access services are commonly called network-attached storage (NAS) devices. Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) An umbrella organization we embrace that provides education and services for storage technologies. Storage subsystem An integrated collection of storage controllers, storage devices, and any related software that provides storage services to one or more computers. Storage resource management (SRM) Software that keeps track of the use of storage devices in a network and warns system administrators before they run out of disk space. Storage Performance Council (SPC) An industry standards organization that defines, promotes, and enforces vendor-neutral benchmarks to characterize the performance of storage subsystems.

Network-attached storage (NAS) This is a specialized file server that connects to the network. It uses traditional LAN protocols such as Ethernet and Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and processes only file I/O requests such as Network File System (NFS) for UNIX and Server Message Block (SMB) for DOS/Windows.
