The data browser is the ABAP workbench utility that allows navigation through and the display of the contents of the ABAP dictionary tables. It also allows for creating table entries for tables which allow maintenance in their technical settings. The data browser can be started directly by selecting Overview Data Browser from the initial ABAP workbench screen or, alternatively, by entering transaction code SE16 in the command field. To display a table's contents, enter the name of the table in the available input field and click on the Display icon in the application toolbar. The system will then display the table contents selection screen, where you can enter specific search criteria to restrict the searching. Enter your search criteria and click on the Execute icon to display the table contents. The resulting list is shown in different colors; you can display the legend by selecting Utilities Color legend from the menu. The key fields are always displayed. You can also display the incoming foreign key relationship by clicking on the Check table button on the application toolbar. Sometimes when there are too many fields to display, the system shows a previous dialog box for you to select which of the fields you want to display. The data browser also allows for creating new entries in case the specific table is set with the Maintenance Allowed check box within the dictionary. The data browser facility is also automatically invoked from the dictionary table maintenance screen by selecting Utilities Table contents. The difference is that when displaying table contents directly from the dictionary, the system automatically displays the selection screen with the table you are working on.

The ABAP editor is the SAP workbench tool for editing the source code of different development objects such as: ABAP program source code: reports, include modules, module pools, and so forth. The editor is also used to maintain other components of an ABAP program such as variants, program attributes, documentation, and text elements. Code for the flow logic for the screen painter. Getting Started with the ABAP Editor The ABAP editor functions go far beyond normal editing features: it is also a fully integrated tool within the development environment, which means that if you include or declare other objects, you can branch directly to those objects. For example, if in your program you declare a table with the TABLES statement, double clicking on the declared table name within the editor will branch directly to the table definition in the ABAP dictionary. The ABAP editor also includes syntax verification, test execution, checking the source code, online ABAP help, and code reusability. To start the editor, just click on ABAP Editor from the initial workbench screen or, alternatively, enter transaction code SE38 in the command field. Figure 7 11 shows the initial ABAP editor screen.

Figure 7 11: ABAP editor initial screen. From this initial screen you can create, modify, and display any of the available objects as shown on the radio button options on the screen. To work with the editor, click on the radio button of the object type you want to work with, enter a name for the object in the Program input field, and then select the corresponding command button to either display or create an object. If you don't know the name of the object, you can click on the possible entries arrow to find or search for one. From the initial editor screen, the system offers many functions included in the menu options and the application toolbar icons, such as renaming an object, deleting an object, searching, and executing. Performing functions on the development object triggers the workbench organizer dialog boxes to introduce the change request numbers. Refer to Chap. 6 for information on the workbench organizer and the transport system.
