To create a new program, you only have to enter a name in the Program input field on the initial screen of the ABAP editor and click on the Create push button. Remember to stick to SAP naming standards for customer programs (start them with Z or Y), otherwise, the system will require a registration key even for programs you create. Figure 7 12 shows the first screen (the attributes screen) when creating a program.

Figure 7 12: Specifying a program's attributes. Before getting into the editor operating procedures, it must be clear that the logical sequence when using the editor is as follows: Define the program attributes Edit the needed source code Define the needed test elements for the type of program Check and verify the program syntax Optionally, create variants Test/execute the program, either online or with the debugger Document the program The whole process can be accomplished without leaving the ABAP editor. In this way, when creating a new program, the tool presents the Attributes display as shown in Fig. 7 12. When displaying or modifying an existing program, by default, the system branches directly to the source code editor display, except if another radio button option is selected from the editor initial screen. However, if you want to display, modify, or execute a nonexisting program, the system will display an error message. Since the workbench is integrated, you may also access the ABAP editor from many other workbench tools, including the repository browser, function libraries, and screen painter.

During the process of creating a new program, the system requests some information to correctly identify and catalog the program. This is the initial program attributes screen as shown in Fig. 7 12. On this screen, you must fill up all the mandatory fields, as you know, which are indicated by a sign. The most important fields are as follows: Title. A brief description of the program identifying its contents or purpose. Type. Here, you must choose the type of program intended in the code. To see the available types, click on the possible entries list arrow. Figure 7 13 shows available values.

Figure 7 13: Program types possible entries. Status. Indicates program status. It's not a mandatory attribute. The status can make some of the ABAP editor functions unavailable. Display the available status by clicking on the possible entries list arrow. Application. This is a required entry which is used for cataloging the program within a particular application. You can also assign the asterisk (*) which indicates that it is not an application specific program. Authorization group. You can assign here a group name which can later be used to establish the access control to that program using the SAP authorization system. Specifically, you can use this group in the authorization field, Authorization group ABAP program, within the authorization object S_PROGRAM. Development class. This field indicates the development class to which the program belongs. It is only a display field. The system requests the development class when first creating the program at the time you save the attributes. Logical database. Indicates the name of the logical database associated with this program (in case of programs of type report). Logical databases are special ABAP programs that reports use to read data from tables. Selection screen. Used only if the program is a report. If you do not specify a selection screen, the system automatically creates one based on the selection criteria of the logical database and the parameters and select options statements used in the program. In other cases the selection screen must correspond with an additional selection screen of the logical database associated with the report. Editor lock. It's used to lock the access to this program. Fixed pt. arithmetic. You can check this field when using fixed point arithmetic operations. Upper/lower case. If you select this, the program code (apart from literals and comments) is converted to uppercase. Once the program attributes are entered, when you save them, the system will display the workbench organizer dialog box, where you have to enter the development class to which the object will belong. You can list the available classes by clicking on the possible entries arrow. Enter your entry and save it. Next, the system will display the following dialog box to assign a change request to the newly created object. You can always display or modify program attributes by clicking the Attributes radio button on the initial ABAP editor screen and clicking on the Change or Display push buttons. The next step is to enter the program source code.
