As mentioned previously, programs are stored in the R/3 database when they are saved. There are several menu options for saving the program source code: Program Save without check. The system stores the program in the database without doing syntactical verification. Program Save as. The program is saved with another name in the database without doing syntax verification. Program Save temp. version. The system stores a temporary program copy in a buffer. This copy is held in the buffer (clipboard) until you perform any other Save function. To restore a temporary copy held on the buffer, select Program Get temp. version. 217

Checking Program Source Code When for any reason (system error, etc.) you leave a program before saving it to the database and a temporary copy was created, when returning to editing the program, the system automatically presents a dialog box where you can decide which copy you want to work with. Available options are as follows: Fetch from buffer (inactive version). The system takes the temporary copy as it was stored in the buffer. The temporary copy becomes the active program version. Fetch from database and get buffer. The system fetches the copy stored in the database but it also makes the temporary copy available in the buffer. The database copy becomes the active version. Fetch from database and delete buffer. The system fetches the copy as stored in the database and deletes the previous temporary buffer. When in doubt, you can execute the Compare function to see the differences between the program database copy and the buffer copy.

The ABAP editor includes some functions to check and verify the program syntax. Depending on the level of syntax analysis to be performed, there are several commands available. The most common way to quickly verify the program syntax at any moment is to click on the Check icon in the application toolbar, or to select Program Check Current program from the menu bar. In both cases the system checks the code of the program in the current editor session and the top include if it exists. You can also perform the syntax check to verify the program with the existing includes by selecting Program Check main program. In any case, the system will display in the status bar any messages about the syntax errors it found. If you want to perform a more comprehensive program verification beyond the syntax check, you can select the Program Check Extended program check from the initial ABAP editor screen. When selecting this function, the system displays a new screen full of check boxes in which you can select the extension of the check to be performed, as displayed in Fig. 7 15. Once the extended check is finished, the system presents a listing with all the errors and warnings grouped by extended verification types.
