When displaying and managing the GUI status, you access the main menu painter screen. However, when creating a GUI status for the first time, the system first displays a dialog box for entering a short description and the GUI status type. You can access the main menu painter screen for defining GUI status by entering the name of the status in the input field, clicking on the status radio button, and then clicking on the Display or Change buttons. You can also access this screen from the repository browser workbench tool, by double clicking on any existing GUI status object, or when creating a new object. From the repository browser screen you can manage all the available component objects for a status; you can go directly to the maintenance options for the specific status objects from the Goto menu. If you create all the objects from a specific status screen, then you are using what SAP calls the stand alone technique. The logical sequence when creating a status should then be 1. Create the GUI status 2. Define the menu bars, menu options, and submenus 3. Define the function key assignments 4. Define the application toolbar 5. Create a GUI title 6. Test and generate the status Creating a GUI Status To create a GUI status, from the initial menu painter screen, enter the name for the status and click on the Create push button. The system displays the dialog box for entering initial data for the status. On this initial screen, you have to enter a short description and select the GUI status type to be associated with the GUI status. Depending on the GUI status type, the user interface will support different menu painter elements. Upon clicking on the Continue button in the previous dialog box, the system displays the main screen for maintaining GUI status, as shown in Fig. 7 25.

Using the Menu Painter GUI Status Type The GUI status type tells the system which kinds of window and components are usually associated with a given GUI status (for example, a dialog box window never has menu bars or a standard toolbar). Available GUI status types are: GUI Status Type Associated with Windows Having Screen Menu bars, standard toolbar, application toolbar, and function keys Dialog box Application toolbar and function keys List Menu bars, standard toolbar, application toolbar, and function keys List in dialog box Application toolbar and function keys Defining the Menu Bar and Submenus Once in the screen for maintaining the status, click on the expand icon next to the Menu bar field (shadowed in blue), and the system will display the fields to define the menus that will appear in the menu bar. To create a menu bar, you have to enter a name in the Menu bar input field which will identify that menu bar. Then you have to enter the name for each menu according to the order you want them to appear in the menu bar. You can create up to six menus, although the menu bar can hold up to eight menus and the system automatically includes the System and Help menus. To create menus, the system allows you to use the standard menu bars as models and then to modify the menus and submenus as proposed by the system standards. Of course, you can create completely new menus without using any standard as template. In the first case, click on the folder with the + sign next to Display standards. The system will display all the usual menus in the standard menu bar. In the second case, where you want to create your own menus without using standards, click on the Hide standards buttons. The system will clear the fields. At this point, you can write on each field the name for the menus you want to create. Menu Components A menu can contain functions, other menus (submenus), and separators. To create components, double click over the menu name. The system will show two columns: Code and Text, with a maximum of 15 rows. The following list shows the meaning of these components. To create the submenu components, leave the function column empty, enter a submenu name, and double click on the submenu text. The system will display the same two columns as for defining a menu option as previously described. Follow the same steps. Figure 7 26 shows a screen with menu and submenu definitions.
