Navigating Through Program Code
During a debugging session, you can navigate through the program and the breakpoints controlling the flow of the program by selecting the available functions included in the ABAP debugger in the form of icons located in the application toolbar. The following list summarizes those functions and buttons: Single step. Executes a single program instruction, even when the flow is transferred to subroutines Execute. Similar to Single step, but when the program instruction is a call to a subroutine, it executes the whole subroutine and stops in the following line of code Continue. Executes the program until it's finished or until it finds the next active breakpoint or watchpoint. Return. Allows for executing the program instructions up to the end of a routine and stops in the line of code where the routine gives the control back to the main program. It is commonly used within routines to exit from them without a step to step execution.

For different reasons, during the debugging process the flow of the program could leave the debugger's control. The ABAP debugger includes some facilities for defining the behavior of the debugging process in these situations. Following is a list with the available options: System debugging Used for allowing the debug process for system programs (type S). To enable or disable this option, users must select settings System debugging. Monitors whether the session roll area has been modified. To enable or disable this option, users must select settings Memory monitoring. Can be used for performing the update function modules within the work process where the debugging is running. To enable or disable this option, users must select settings Update debug. On/off. Can be used for defining the system behavior when encountering warnings.

To enable or disable this option, users must select settings warnings on/off and settings cancel on warning. In background task: Lock Can be used for debugging modules that are executed in the background, but are release called from the program being debugged. To enable this option, users must select the check box In background task: Lock release within the setting view. All these options can be displayed and modified in the ABAP debugger setting view.
Displaying and Modifying Field Values
Every time the program is stopped in a program instruction within a debugging session you can display and modify the contents of tables and fields. Users can display the contents for the following fields: System fields Program fields ABAP dictionary fields (when defined in the program with the TABLES keyword) External program fields In order to do this, in the fields view screen of the debugger, enter the name of the field do be displayed. The system automatically displays the content. Figure 7 38 shows an example of field view within the debugger.
