Technical settings are special table attributes which help to optimize such table resources as storage requirement, input/output, logged change entries, and so forth. Figure 8 7 shows an example of the screen for maintaining table technical settings.

Figure 8 7: Screen for maintaining a table's technical settings. The most relevant parameters in the technical settings are as follows: Data class. Establishes the physical area of the database (tablespace) where the table is to be stored. Size category. Allows you to specify estimated space requirements for the table in the database. Data class and size categories only are relevant for the Oracle and Informix databases. These two parameters, data class and size category, are necessary when tables are created in the database. Further down the screen under the Buffering square box, the system allows for specifying: Whether the table is going to be buffered. When a table is buffered, it is loaded in the tables buffer from the application server memory, and it will remain there until the application server reboots; then the buffer is reset or the object is swapped out because of insufficient buffer space. Tables are buffered in order to improve an application's performance when accessing the table data. However, this is not very appropriate for tables with very high levels of updating activity. Buffering mechanisms within client/server distributed systems require a buffer synchronization procedure for the whole system, that is, for all the application servers. This issue is further explained in Chap. 4. There are three buffering options: Buffering not permitted. This option is used for tables that are updated frequently, and in which the latest data must be accessed without waiting for synchronization of buffers between application servers and the database server. Buffering allowed but switched off. The user or developer responsible can decide whether or not to activate buffering for that particular table. Buffering activated. This buffers a table, and is used mainly for tables with lots of read access and 271

Generating the Table in the Database little or no updating. In this case, the user must also specify the buffering type. When the table is to be buffered, the buffering type must be indicated. Options are: Single records. The buffer will only store the table record accessed. Generic. The buffer will store all the table entries that correspond to a specific part of the key that has been selected. For example, if the primary key of the table is made up of the first three fields, and the generic buffering is established using the first two fields, only the records that match the first two fields of the primary key will be stored in the memory buffers. Full. All table rows are loaded into memory buffers. Tables buffered using the Single records type are included within the TABLP table, while other types are stored within TABL. For more information on buffering tables, please refer to the chapter "Buffering Database Tables" in the BC ABAP dictionary guide or in the online documentation from SAP. Since release 4.0 there are two additional options for table technical settings: Log data changes. Setting this flag enables every change on table records to be kept in a log file. The log file registers the UPDATE and DELETE operations performed directly either by user online transactions or other application programs. For logging to be active, you also need to set the instance profile parameter rec/client. This option must be handled with care since it can seriously affect global system performance. Convert to transparent table or Maintain as transparent table. The first flag appears for tables of type pool as well as for all other tables that have been converted to transparent tables.
