The left part of the display corresponds to Editor contents options, while the right hand side of the screen contains options for trace filter management. The following is an overview of each of these parts: Trace types. Under this box you must check what is to be included in the trace files. For example, to trace the ABAP program calls, you must click on the Detail view icon to Call from ABAP prog. The system will display an additional dialog box for selecting the type of ABAP calls to be traced. If you want to trace authorizations, you must select the check box next to Authorization check. For the trace types which do not have a check box, but do have a push button, you can also set the trace options from the Goto Edit details menu. If you do not select any available type, the trace file will not contain any information. General management. Under this option there are two important fields: General filters can include general tracing restrictions as set in the Standard options setting. These settings can be overwritten, however, and include additional restrictions regardless of the trace type. You can access this function from the menu by selecting Goto Edit details General filters. Write options displays a dialog box for entering how the system will write the trace. You must set here the option Trace: Write to disk if you want the trace to be written to a trace file. Figure 10 21 shows this dialog box.

If you select the check box next to Write unbuffered, the trace entries will be written directly to disk without going to the trace buffer. This, however, will reduce the system performance. Status of active system. This shows the actual status of the system tracing process. If you can't see any options configured, load configuration by selecting Trace switch Editor load from From active system. The Active trace type will automatically be filled according to the selected traces. In the File selection field, you can enter any value from 0 to 9 and from A to Z. This value will be substituted in the variable as defined in the rstr/file profile parameter. The default value of this profile parameter is /usr/sap/<SID>/<instance name>/log/TRACE+00, and the chosen letter substitutes the + sign. In the Filter field, you can enter a name for your trace editor selections to store them in the database. It works like a report variant. To save a filter, from the menu, select Trace switch Editor save in Database (new) or just click the Save changed filter records icon next to it. You can load a filter from the database by first selecting the filter and then choosing Trace switch Editor load from From database. 3 auxiliary memories. Practical Example: Setting and Displaying a Trace The basic steps to start the tracing process and display a trace file are as follows: 1. You should wait a couple minutes to allow the system trace to write the buffer contents to disk before displaying it. 5. Now you should look at the trace file generated. To display the trace, go to the initial trace screen and click on the Standard button. The system displays a list of trace files. 6. Double click on any of the files to display their contents. A trace file might be quite long, so you have to scroll down as necessary. The file includes a header showing the editor options for the trace as well as administration information. 7. Scroll down the file as necessary. You can display additional information on trace entries by double clicking on them. For information on how to interpret the highly technical contents of the trace files, please refer to the SAP online documentation and to the specific SAP notes on tracing.

Using the System Trace System Tracing: Technical Details The system traces are written in circular files, as specified in the File selection option. If you do not change the file selection, the trace is always written to the same file. These files are located by default in the instance log directory, that is, /usr/sap/ <SID>/<instance name>/log. When a trace file becomes full, the system starts writing again from the beginning of the file. The trace file might include several tracing sessions. In this case, it will include some messages indicating where one trace ends and a new one begins. Before writing the trace entries to disk, the traces use internal buffers which are being transferred to disks as they become full. You can specify both the maximum size of trace files and the path name for the trace files using instance profile parameters. All the tracing parameter names begin with the rstr prefix. The parameters you can maintain are rstr / file. Enter here the absolute path name for the trace files. By default, the system sets the log directory of the SAP instance. The trace file name is TRACE+<system number>, where the + sign is the variable substituted with the File selection value from the editor, and <system number> is the SAP system number or the instance number. For example: TRACEA00. rstr / max_diskspace. You can enter here the maximum amount of disk space in bytes which can be allocated to the trace files. By default, this value is approximately 16 MB.
