The system developer traces are log files which contain technical information about the SAP work processes and other programs. They are normally used by specialized personnel, especially by SAP support, when looking for problems in the SAP kernel or the runtime programs. These traces can be useful also for administrators, since some of the files sometimes contain the explicit reason and explanation for system errors. To display the list of developer traces, from the monitoring menu, select Traces Developer traces. The system will display a list with the title Error log files as shown in Fig. 10 22. These files are actually operating system files located under the work and profile directories. To display the contents of any file, just double click on them, or select Log file Display from the menu.

The error lines can be useful for displaying what functions and what operations caused the error message. If any of the entries are also writing system log entries, then the line begins with *** LOG <message ID>. The names of all the developer trace files start with the character string dev. The following list shows the developer trace file names. You can set the level of tracing to be included in the developer trace files by adding the options to the start command lines of any SAP program. The start commands are normally located in the startup profile of the SAP instances. Available options are TRACE=0. No trace is written to files. 386

The computer center management system (CCMS) is a collection of tools and utilities which allows you to monitor, manage, and configure the R/3 system. The CCMS toolset supports most of the system management functions needed for an R/3 system from within the same R/3 system. The CCMS provides a series of graphical monitors and management utilities, including functions for the following: Starting and stopping SAP instances Monitoring and analyzing the workload of the underlying operating systems, the network, the database engine, and the SAP system itself Automatic problem detection with the use and configuration of alert thresholds Definition of operation modes with 24 hours unattended work process automatic reconfiguration Instance profile checking and maintenance Logon load balancing Centralized management of usual activities of the printing system, database, and background system Data archiving functions The CCMS manages a very large amount of highly technical information, which can only be understood with a deep knowledge of the operating system, underlying database architecture, network, and the R/3 internals. For that reason, this chapter is not intended to be a substitute for the official SAP documentation on CCMS, but it is to help you understand the concepts of the system and present the available features. Included are several examples of those utilities which can be more useful in the daily operation and maintenance of the system. Some of the features which are accessed from the CCMS are dealt with more specifically in other chapters. For example, for background job monitoring, analyzing, and configuration, refer to Chap. 13. SAP servers group load balancing is introduced and explained in Chap. 4, and common administration utilities are introduced in Chap. 10. Instances and instance profiles are covered in Chaps. 2 and 4. Due to the introduction of the new monitoring architecture with release 4.0 and the maintenance of the familiar alert monitors of releases 3.x, Chap. 12 deals exclusively with the alert monitors.
