Administrator Duties with the CCMS R / 3 instances. An instance defines the resources needed by a SAP application server, such as memory configuration, number and type of services provided (work processes), and so on. Every R/3 instance has its own memory buffers and is controlled by a single dispatcher process. R/3 instances are identified with an instance name, normally with the syntax <hostname>_<SID>_<system number>, for example: copi01_TT1_00. For every R/3 instance, the system creates separate directories under the /usr/sap/<SID>, automatically generates the instance profiles, and inserts some entries in several operating system files such as the /etc/services. R/3 instances are created when the R/3 system is installed and also when installing additional dialog servers. Instances profiles. The SAP system profile files include the group of parameters which sets the values for the resources needed by the R/3 instances, as well as for the number and location of the R/3 services in a SAP installation. These files are initially generated when installing the SAP system and additional dialog instances. Types and parameter syntax of these files are explained in the section entitled "Profiles" in Chap. 4. From version 3.0 onward, these files must be maintained only with the available utilities within the CCMS. This is explained in the section entitled "Maintaining Profiles" later in this chapter. Operation modes. With operation modes, system managers define how they want the SAP services to be allocated and started in the configured R/3 instances. Their main use is to automatically switch work process types to better distribute the available resources. For example, you can define operation modes to have many dialog work processes during normal working hours which can automatically switch to background work processes during night operation for processing background jobs scheduled at night. Control panel. The control panel is a central monitor which presents an overview of the whole SAP system status and is where most management functions can be performed, such as changing operation modes, starting and stopping instances, and so on. The control panel includes many different views for displaying status, alert, performance, or error information. Monitors. R/3 includes several monitors, both list oriented and graphical, which allow for online monitoring of the system. Monitors display the alerts defined in the system. Monitors can be configured to work to dynamically refresh the information at periodic intervals. This feature and the color coding makes a valuable tool for fast problem detection and corrections. Since release 4.0, SAP R/3 offers a monitoring architecture with new monitors and alert management, to which external monitoring tools can be easily added. The new monitoring architecture follows SAP's strategy of overall object orientation. Alerts. Alerts are important predefined system events which are constantly monitored. SAP includes alerts for the database, the operating system, the network, and R/3 components. System managers can define alert thresholds, that is, the values which will make the system show an alert message when a specific event or system condition occurs. Alerts can be simple warnings or critical errors. For example, system managers can configure the alert thresholds to trigger an alert when a file system exceeds 80 percent of the available space. For reasons of compatibility with releases prior to 4.0, besides the new monitoring architecture, SAP includes the possibility of defining and managing alarms with tools from previous 3.x releases. Performance and workload statistics collectors. The R/3 system incorporates several collector programs and background jobs which keeps a record of both current workload statistics and history workload for the operating system, the database, the network, and the R/3 system. The different workload monitors permit a fine analysis of performance problems, as well as a big help for the preventive maintenance of the whole system.
