Figure 11 12: Assigning time ranges to operation modes. Select the operation mode and click on the Enter key to assign it to the time period chosen. Save your changes. You must define the whole 24 hour range for operation modes to work. You cannot leave any time period unassigned, otherwise the switch will not be possible and can cause problems in the background processing system. To define an exception operation, select the radio button next to Exception operation and click on the Change button. Proceed with the normal operation for assigning operation modes to the timetable. The only difference is that you have to specify a date for the exceptional operation to work. The system provides the functions Day+1, Day 1, or Specify a day.

After modifying any of the CCMS configurations, you should check whether the operation modes, profiles, and instance definitions are consistent and correctly defined. This check will inform you of any potential problems which should be corrected before restarting an instance or the whole SAP system. To do a consistency check, from the productive instance list, like the one shown in Fig. 11 10, select Instance Consistency test.

Operation modes switch automatically at the times defined in the timetable (using the system program SAPMSSY2) or when the system starts or when there are no active operation modes (using the system program SAPMSSY6). When operation modes are switched, the R/3 system work processes are redistributed automatically without stopping and restarting the instances. Only the work process types are changed. For example, a work process used as a dialog process can be switched for use as a background process. A new process type will not be activated until the process is completely free, normally in a waiting status. For example, if a background job is running a long report and must be switched to dialog work process, the switch will wait until the job has finished and the background work process is free. This means that sometimes processes may not be switched immediately but at the next possible time. Processing is not interrupted. Normal system operation continues uninterrupted during the operation mode switch.

Operation Mode Switching Operation mode switches are recorded in the system log. The old process type and the new process type are recorded for each switched work process. Manual Operation Mode Switch You can manually switch operation modes at any time from the control panel. To do that, two steps are necessary: first define which will be the new active operation mode, then perform the operation mode change for one or all active instances/servers. To perform this from the CCMS main menu, select Control/Monitoring Control panel. By default, the system displays the instance status and the operation mode. Click on an instance, and then select Choose OP mode. The system displays a list of the available operation modes. Choose the one you want to switch to. The system will switch the operation mode and return to the initial screen. You may see the status non standard operation mode because they are still running in the currently active operation mode. For the second step, you have two options: 1. Change the operation mode for a single instance. 2. Change the operation mode for all instances. To switch the operation mode on one instance/server, select the instance by double clicking on the server line (change color) and then selecting Control Switch OP mode Selected server. To switch the operation mode on all servers, select Control Switch OP mode All servers. The servers remain in the manually activated operation mode until the next switch time. The system displays an error message if the operation mode switch cannot be performed on all the chosen servers.
