Since release R/3 4.0 it is also possible to define logical printer devices. Logical printer devices are virtual devices that must be mapped against existing defined printer devices in the system. When creating a logical printer device, what the system actually defines is a device of access type P or Pool Device, mapped against only one physical device. In this sense, a Logical Device can be considered as a Pool Device with one and only one physical device assigned. About Pools Device pools have the purpose of grouping devices of the same type (for example, PostScript printers) using a unique device name, thus permitting the spool requests directed to that pool to be printed by any of the devices assigned to the pool. This type of device definition is completely equivalent to well known logical printer queues of many operating systems, where a print job directed to the logical queue is output by any of the physical queues defined for the logical queue. In SAP R/3, what is assigned to the pool is not the physical printer itself but the output device, which can be either logical or physical. When the device is a logical device, it must be directly or indirectly mapped to a physical device. A device pool covers two basic functions of the printing devices: Sending spool requests to all printing devices associated with a device pool Balancing the load of print requests among the devices that make up the device pool, avoiding possible spool bottlenecks Defining a Logical Printer Device To define a logical printer device, from the initial Spool Administration screen select the option Output devices. Then click on the Create icon from the application toolbar. The system displays the Spool Administration: Create Output Device screen as shown in Fig. 14 6. 484

Logical R/3 Output Devices and Device Pools Proceed as usual, by filling in all required fields; then, instead of clicking on the Save icon, click on the Logical device option in the application toolbar. This will lead you to a new screen, as shown in Fig. 14 9.

Defining a Device Pool To define a device pool, select Output devices from the Spool Administration initial screen. Then click on the Create icon from the menu bar. The system displays the Spool Administration: Create Output Device screen. Fill in the required fields and select P as access method. Save the definition by clicking on the Save icon. The system displays a dialog box with an information message stating that "the device pool must contain at least one device." Click on the Continue icon to proceed to next screen. On the new screen, just as if a logical device was being defined, enter the following information: Mapping to. You can enter the first printer device of your pool in this field, or leave it empty. Location. Description information. Message. Messages to users who use this output device. If this field is empty, then the location message is displayed. Next, click on the Physical device option. The system will display a new screen as shown in Fig. 14 10.

Introduction to the SAP Access Methods Select Device pool from the application toolbar. A new screen will be shown where you will be able to update the device list for the pool just created. In this new screen, you must also select the pool function: Send to a device pool. This is the option for balancing printing among devices. Send to all devices in pool. This option can be used when you need to send the same print job to all devices at the same time. Enter the devices on the device list column and click on Continue. You will be returned to previous screen. Just click on Save to finish the definition of the device pool.
