The SAP R/3 provides a standard set of printing controls which behave like sequences of printing instructions, which are converted or translated into escape commands sequences controlling how text is printed by the specified output device. These escape command sequences must be compatible with the printer specific language the printer must understand these escape commands. The print controls can manage such things as font size, bolding, italics, underline, and so on. For example, assume that you want to use a print control that tells the printer to print with a 12cpi font, italics, and normal intensity; this print control could be defined as SF012. According to the target output device, the content for this print control might be different; for instance, if the target printer is a Digital LA210, the print control must 492

Working with Print Controls include an escape command sequence such as 1B5B32771B5B317A; if the target printer is an HP LaserJet or an IBM Proprinter, then the escape sequence is different. This fact indicates that with the same print control, you can work with different types of printers and get the same result, making the definition of the escape sequence completely independent of the result of a report or form within the R/3 system. In fact, the print controls are the technical translations (mapping) between the SAP world and the output devices. Print controls are used both for printing SAPscript text as well as for other types of print output, such as reports. The SAPscript output uses print controls which are distinguished by standard SAP naming conventions: all print controls for SAPscript start with the character S. Once a new output device has been created, it's necessary to assign it the print controls. There are two ways to assign print controls: Create them, one by one, from the Edit Print Control screen Create them by using a copy from a similar device and then modify the needed controls Defining New Print Controls To define new print controls, from the initial Spool Administration screen, click the push button next to Device types. The system displays a list of devices. Select the device for which you want to create the print controls and click the Print controls button on the application toolbar. The system displays a new screen, Edit print controls, as shown in Fig. 14 17. On this screen, you find the following columns: PrtCtrl. It's the name for the print control sequence. V (variant). This field indicates how the escape sequences are to be handled: 1: Enter the print control as defined in the text. All the SAP script print controls are defined using this variant. 5: The control code is entered only once in the text, based on a prefix (ESCAP) and a SUFFIX.

The first radio button (Direct column) sets a value of 1, and the second radio button (Extended column) sets a value of 5. Hex. This option is the escape sequence containing hexadecimal data.

Working with Print Controls Control char. Seq. This field is used for entering the appropriate escape sequence according to the specifications for the print control. For example, for the device ZDECMT60 in Fig. 14 18, the print control SF002 has the escape sequence 1B5B34771B5B317A. This is an escape control sequence for a Digital DEC LA210 printer working in native mode. This sequence defines the Horizontal Pitch and the Vertical Pitch. Thus, the sequence 1B5B represents the character CSI, which is the same as the combination ESC[. Next, the hexadecimal values 34 and 77 indicate that characters must be written with 8.25 characters per inch. The next control sequence, after the second 1B5B, is the set for the vertical pitch, 31 and 7A, which indicates to write 6 lines per inch.

Figure 14 18: Editing print controls after a standard print control was transferred. When a new print control which was not included in the standard SAP R/3 system is defined, first it must be created with the option Insert standard print control. Upon choosing this option, the system displays a list of missing standard print controls for the device. To define a new print control, select one from the list of standard print controls by double clicking on it. The system automatically includes it in the print control list, where you can edit it and set the needed values. For example, if you select the standard print control RESET, the system goes back to the previous screen and inserts it in alphabetical order. Predefined Print Controls This section is taken from SAP documentation. (Copyright by SAP AG.) The list below shows the print control keywords that have been predefined by SAP for use in the SAP system editor and in ABAP PRINT CONTROL statements. You should not alter the use of any of these keywords. Otherwise, printing may produce unpredictable results. Note that SAPscript uses its own private set of print controls when it formats text for output. These print controls are listed separately in the next section. <xx>BEG: Per formatting group, marks the start of a region that is to be formatted. Reserved for future use. <xx>END: Per formatting group, marks the end of a region that is to be formatted. Reserved for future use. BAROF: Ends bar code printing. BARON: Starts bar code printing. Working with Print Controls CI<characters>: Specifies the character pitch (characters printed per inch). The character pitches in existing CI print controls are three digit numbers which are read without a decimal place. For example, character pitch 10 is represented by the control code CI010. The system reads the value as "10". CO<nnn>: Obsolete. Has been replaced by predefined print controls COL<xx> of the FORMAT instruction. COL<xx>: Sets list colors for color and halftone printing. These print controls are associated with the ABAP statement FORMAT. ESCAP: Defines the prefix for an escape sequence. FO<nnn>: Specifies the font. LI<lines>: Specifies the leading (lines printed per inch). The leadings in existing LI print controls are three digit numbers which are read without a decimal place. For example, a leading of six lines to the inch is represented by the control code LI006. The system reads the value as "6". LM<nnn>: Sets the left margin. RESET: Reset sequence for returning a printer to its standard settings. SABLD: Starts boldface printing. SAULN: Starts underlining. SAOFF: Stops boldface printing and underlining. SEPAR: Defines the separation character to place between consecutive printer control codes. SI<nnn>: Font size. The font sizes in existing SI print controls are three digit numbers which are read without a decimal place. There is no convention for entering font sizes at this time. Select SI001 for a normal font size, SI002 for a larger font. SUFFX: Defines the suffix for a printer control code. SAPscript Print Control List SAPscript reserves the use of the print controls for the drivers that are used with the different device types. For information on other reserved print controls, please refer to the SAP online documentation BC Printing Guide. There is a special print control which deserves a special mention. With the SF<nnn> print control, it's possible to define specific user fonts with SAPscript for a particular output or print device, assigning a user defined control sequence. To make the SF<nnn> print control available for SAP script, it must be entered within the SAPscript font maintenance function. This is demonstrated in the case study described later in this chapter.
