The sapdba utility uses a set of parameters that can be defined in an initialization profile file. These parameters describe initial values for many of the functions that can be performed by sapdba and related utilities. Some examples are: type of backup, default file compression, size of export and import buffer, and so on. This file is located by default under the /oracle/<SID>/dbs directory in UNIX systems, and \orant\database in Windows NT systems. And the default name is init<SID>.dba. If this file does not exist, sapdba uses standard default set parameters. When calling sapdba in command mode, you can overwrite the parameters set in the initialization profile by using a different profile. You do this using option p. In menu mode, you can always overwrite default values with new ones just by selecting the needed option and changing it. Some of the available parameters are volume_backup, tape_size, cpio_flags, compress, and backup_mode. For a complete and current list of parameters and the actual permitted values, please refer to the SAP online documentation. Any changes made to the profile parameters will be active when starting the sapdba program.

Configuring sapdba: The Initialization Profile init<sid>.dba sapdba: Display Settings To get a correct screen display of the sapdba program, you must correctly set both the LINES and COLUMNS environment variables (operating system specific), as well as the TERM variable on UNIX systems. sapdba displays correctly using 24 lines by 80 columns. The TERM variable must be set according to your terminal type. Typical terminal variable vt100 will work correctly for most terminal emulation programs and operating systems. You can configure the number of lines for the screen display of the sapdba menus. By default, it is set to use 24 lines. However, if your display has fewer than 24 lines, you can get a correct display of sapdba by setting the LINES variable before calling the program. You should also make sure that the UNIX at command functions properly. The sapdba program uses the at command for launching reorganizations to be processed on the background. You normally have to add the ora<sid> user to the at.allow file. Refer to the UNIX help or documentation for the command at. sapdba Log Files The log files generated when performing sapdba functions are kept either in the sapreorg directory or in the sapcheck directory. Although sapdba logs all the functions performed when using the tool, it does not log by default the result of an operation. If you want to keep the results of a specific check, you have to set the log option to yes. For example, if you perform the freespace and fragmentation check within the Tablespace administration menu, you can decide to keep the results of the check in a log file by setting the log checks option (option b) to yes. In this case, a log with the form <timestamp>.ext is generated under the sapreorg directory. You set the log check option by simply selecting the option. It works like a switch: if it is set to no (default), it is changed to yes and vice versa. Setting the option to yes is only valid for the current menu. If you go back to another menu, the option is set back to no.

To enhance the internal security when using sapdba, you can set the expert mode and assign it a password for protecting the most important (or critical) functions of the tool. You can then restrict the access to some of the functions that can only be performed when someone identified as the expert enters the password. These protected functions are the ones that could most negatively affect the system if used incorrectly. When these functions are protected by the expert mode, anytime a user using sapdba tries to perform any of those, the system will display a message indicating that it is protected. To proceed, the user must identify him or herself using the expert mode function. In this way, knowing the expert mode password is equivalent to having privileges for performing those critical functions. Note The expert mode is not supported on Windows NT platforms. To call the expert mode, from the initial sapdba screen select option m User and Security and then option a Expert mode. Figure 15 5 shows this screen.
