Figure 15 5: The sapdba expert mode screen First of all, if you want to manage the expert mode functions, you have to identify yourself as the expert. Select function a Switch expert mode, and enter the expert password in the lower part of the menu as requested by the system. If the password is correct, the system activates the expert mode, and the entry EXPERT MODE: ON appears at the top of the menu. If the user doesn't know the password, she or he can only use the option Show/Alter privileges for main options to check what functions have been protected with expert mode. Using the expert mode, you have the ability to lock the following sapdba menu options: START/STOP. When protected, it locks the option Startup/Shutdown instance. TSP_ADMIN. When protected, it locks the options Tablespace administration Alter tablespace, Add Datafile, and Create tablespace. REORG. When protected, it locks the following reorganization options: Reorganize single table or index, Reorganize list of tables and indexes, Reorganize tablespace, Reorganize tablespace and data files, and Move/rename data files of a tablespace. EXP/IMP. When protected, it locks the export/import option. ARCHIVE_MODE. When protected, it locks the options Archive mode Toggle database log mode and Toggle automatic archival. EXEC_SQL_SCRIPT. When protected, it locks the option Additional functions Execute SQL scripts. BACKUP. When protected, it locks the options Backup database and Backup archive logs. RESTORE. When protected, it locks the options Check (and repair) database and Restore/Recovery. CLEANUP. When protected, it locks the option Show/Cleanup Cleanup log files/directories. ALTER. When protected, it locks the option Reorganization Alter/show table or index storage parameters. To display which functions are protected, or if you want to protect additional ones, first identify yourself as the expert if you haven't done so yet, and then select option d Show /Alter privileges for main options. To apply or remove the protection for any of the available functions, just enter the function's number. When you are finished, press q (quit) to go back to the previous menu. If you have made any changes, you will notice that there is a reminder in the privileges display. You still must save your privileges using menu option e Save current privileges. (The privileges are stored in the database table SAPDBAPRIV, so if the database is not up and running, sapdba cannot save any changes to the privileges.)

Using the sapdba Expert Mode Expert Mode Password To set the expert mode password for the first time, select option b Set initial password for expert from the expert menu. The system will request you enter a new password and confirm it a second time. The password is stored in encrypted form in the file passwd.dba under the /oracle/<SID>/passwd directory. Make sure to protect this directory by assigning it the root owner. However, when the password is protected, you might need to change the owner back to ora<sid> before changing the password. Normally, the password is changed from the expert's menu using the same option. However, if you forget the password, you must first delete the passwd directory and set the password again just as if it were the first time you entered it.
