If you specify a different path because there is not enough storage to hold the new file, the sapdata directory will be different, but the subdirectory and the file name will be the same. SAP allows you to specify nonstandard paths (directories) for the new data files; however, the sapdba tool will first create the data file in the specified nonstandard path, but it will also create a symbolic link between the standard path and your directory. This way of functioning with symbolic links is what is used when working with raw devices. Extending Special Tablespaces: SYSTEM and PSAPTEMP The sapdba tool can also be used to extend the size of special tablespaces such as SYSTEM and PSAPTEMP. However, you must be extremely careful, since once SYSTEM has been extended, it cannot be reduced except by performing complicated reorganizations. You can find notes in SAPnet about this issue. The PSAPTEMP tablespace can be extended as long as the SAP system has been stopped and there are no processes using temporary segments.

The sapdba tool supports creating completely new tablespaces as long as they follow standard SAP naming conventions (PSAP<TSP><D | I>). PSAPROLL and PSAPTEMP can also be created with SAPDBA, but not the SYSTEM tablespace. To call this option, first enter the tablespace name using option a in the tablespace administration initial menu and then select option g Create / drop database. The system will ask whether you want to create the new tablespace in a file system or raw device. Make your selection. Next, the system will display a screen like the one shown in Fig. 15 14 when using file systems.

Figure 15 14: Menu for creating new tablespaces. When creating a new tablespace that is going to hold either a SAP index or data, you must ensure that both tablespaces will be created and also ensure that both will be created in different file systems (sapdatas). The sapdba tool will verify whether both tablespaces (data and index) exist and will display a message. It does not create the counterpart automatically. Obviously, when creating the first one, the other one does not yet exist, but you can continue the process. Before creating new tablespaces, you should know beforehand what data is going to store, as well as calculate the growth estimates, since you must specify the size and storage parameters for the new tablespaces. Depending on whether you have chosen file system or raw device, the system displays different options: File system or raw device (UNIX only). The menu displays whether you will be creating the tablespace in a file system or on raw devices and gives you the option to choose again. Please refer to the Oracle and SAP recommendations found in official documentation for working on raw devices. File size (UNIX) or New size (NT). Enter the approximate size for the initial datafile of the tablespace. Make it big enough for holding the requested data as well as for additional free space to avoid storage or fragmentation problems. Do not leave the default value, which is usually twice the Oracle block size. Select sapdata path. When selecting this option, the system displays the list of all the sapdata directories with a mark of data files already in use by its corresponding data or index tablespace (if it exists). For a tablespace that still does not have a counterpart data or index tablespace, select the sapdata that you think might be the most convenient, then remember to create the other in a different sapdata. Using the Select sapdata path option for defining the new data file name offers the advantage that the system will display which directories and what free space are available.

Introduction to Database Reorganizations Using sapdba Alter suggested path. The sapdba tool shows the default path following SAP standard naming conventions for tablespaces and data files, or it will display the one you entered using the previous Select path option. If you select a different one, the system will check if there is enough free space for adding the data file. This option is f Select new path from a list of file systems on Windows NT. Default storage parameters. Although the system displays some standard storage values, you can change them all. Refer to storage parameters at a later section. When table or index segments are later created in this tablespace, these will be the default values used for them. Start (create tablespace). Select this option to start creating the tablespace. As usual, the log is created in the work directory sapreorg, which can be found by the time stamp.
