To start a reorganization, please observe the points indicated previously in "Considerations before Performing Reorganizations" and "Speeding Up Reorganizations." To be able to recover an error situation while reorganizing, it's particularly important to follow the SAP backup concept. Before starting to reorganize, remember to stop the SAP system and start the database in restricted mode for exclusive use by the administrator. Basically, when any type of reorganization is run with the sapdba tool, the following things happen: The system checks the requirements and creates the scripts that will actually perform the reorganization. Database objects (its data contents and definition) are exported to dump files. Database objects are dropped (deleted) from the database. Database objects are newly created (defined) in the database, often using different storage parameters. Database objects (contents) are imported back into the database using the previously exported dump files. Other related objects are regenerated (indexes). When a reorganization is performed using the sapdba functions, the preceding procedures take place in two phases: a preparation phase and a main phase. The Preparation Phase The preparation phase, in which the system creates all the needed script for performing the reorganization: export script for creating the export dump files, import script, restart script, SQL scripts for dropping and creating database objects, and so on. The type and number of scripts depend on the reorganization type. For each type of script and object, the system generates a log file under the working directory (sapreorg) below one or more <timestamp> subdirectories. In this preparation phase, sapdba determines if the SAP instance is running by checking whether the database user SAPR3 is connected. If this is the case, it will issue a warning message. It will also check that free space in data files as well as storage requirements in file systems is enough to hold the reorganization. At the end of the preparation phase, when all the scripts have been created and the checks performed, sapdba will offer the option of starting the scripts immediately, in batch, or at a later time. Figure 15 23 shows an example of the system output on the preparation phase.

Figure 15 23: Running reorganization up to the end of the preparation phase. The Main Phase The main phase is in charge of processing the scripts created in the preparation phase, thus performing the real reorganization. Before starting the reorganization, the system will make sure that the user SAPR3 is not connected. Otherwise, the reorganization will be terminated. The sapdba tool will process the reorganization by running the previously created scripts: It will first process the export phase, in which the object's contents and definition are exported into an export dump file in the work directory. Next, objects (and contents) are deleted from the database. Notice that, because actual deletion occurs, it is important to have a backup, since if a severe error occurs in the next steps, the database can be severely damaged, and only a recovery from backups might be possible. There is a script in charge of creating the object's definition, probably with modified storage parameters as before the reorganization. For example, by setting the INITIAL extent to the size of the whole table or index. Next, the data is imported back into the newly defined objects. Depending on the reorganization type, other scripts will be performed, such as index creation.

From the initial sapdba reorganization menu as shown in Fig. 15 15, there are several menu options for performing reorganizations. From the initial menu, you select the reorganization type (for example, option e Reorganize tablespace, which will display a new menu with several options as shown in Fig. 15 24). These menus will contain slightly different options depending on the chosen reorganization types.
