The sapdba tool includes a menu option with several functions for exporting and importing database objects. With these functions, you export and import all types of database objects: tables, indexes, views, grants, and so on. You can decide to export and import both the database object definitions and contents. Notice than performing an export will make a static copy of the exported objects. This means that this export should only be used as the source of a following import when the database contents have not changed. Exports and imports cannot be used for recovery procedures. You cannot use exports to import into a different system (database) since the relationship among the elements is too complex (foreign key relationships, check tables, and so on). Functions offered in the export/import menu cannot be used for exporting and importing the full database. To do this, there are other options, mainly with the R3SETUP installation tool or by manually using the Oracle import and export utility programs (imp and exp or impst and expst). The following section contains a practical guideline for performing a full database export and import between different systems, or even to the same system, under certain circumstances. Export and import functions within the sapdba menu can be used for Performing operations in the same database. Backing up single objects (table or index data) before a reorganization. Since it's assumed that no productive activity can be performed during reorganizations, exported objects could be reimported into the system in case of problems. Running import scripts for previously generated exports. Saving definitions for database objects. When exporting structures, the system creates the scripts needed for redefining the objects. There are, however, other utilities within the SAP R/3 systems that can be used to perform the same or similar export/import operations: using the transport system or using the R3trans utility program. Export and import procedures are sequenced in the following phases: 562

Exporting and Importing Database Objects In the first phase, the system creates the necessary scripts for the export and import of the selected objects, either for only the structure, the contents, or both. For export functions, in the second phase, the previously created export scripts are processed. For import functions, the system processes the script for importing the object definitions and their contents. These are practically the same operations as those performed during a reorganization. In fact, as mentioned earlier, reorganization procedures are based on export and import operations. To access the export and import functions, from the initial sapdba menu, select option e Export / import. Figure 15 30 shows this menu.

Figure 15 30: Initial menu for export and import functions. From this menu, the system offers several export and import options. When calling any of those available menu options, sapdba will show an additional menu where you can choose which parameters to use. These new menus are very similar to the ones shown on reorganization menus, and the options such as Working directory, data transfer method, Use of ABAP Dict for NEXT, Storage Parameters, parallel index creation, and so on, have exactly the same meaning and perform the same functions as explained in the section on reorganization in this chapter. Similarly, you must meet the storage requirements for allowing sufficient space for the export dumps and must conveniently size the tablespaces to hold imported objects. The system will check all the space requirements, but, contrary to the reorganization processes, sapdba will not check if the import will run successfully. Notice that exports or imports that include data should be performed with the database started in restricted mode. However, you can export database object definitions with the database up and running. To carry with any export or import function, after checking the requirements and stopping the SAP system, select the most appropriate type (menu option), which is self explanatory. Then, change the required parameters, and proceed by selecting s Start. Export and import functions generate similar log, script, and restart files as reorganizations. These files are stored under the working directory, normally sapreorg/<timestamp>. The file extension meanings can be found in Table 15 2.
