The brarchive is the utility provided by SAP to back up the Oracle archived redo log files. Backing up the archived log files is required for having a consistent backup and recovery strategy. You can only perform point in time recoveries or partial database recoveries by having the archived redo log files conveniently saved. For recovery procedures, all the archived redo log files from the last consistent backup must be available in the correct sequence. If any redo log file is missing, a recovery will only be possible up to the gap point. Actually, the archived files are essential for recovering logical error situations, such as the erroneous deletion of system objects. If you want to restore the situation up to the point before the deletion, you can only do it with the archived log files. The brarchive utility is called from the sapdba menu or invoked in the command line. By default, the archived redo log files are automatically written by the Oracle archiver process in the saparch directory. The location can be changed by altering the parameter in the init<sid>.ora file. This directory must have been conveniently sized. But it's as important to define a convenient strategy for backing up and then deleting the archived redo log files from this directory, since these archived files are being constantly populated as the users work with the system. If this directory becomes full and no more archives can be written, the system issues the archiver stuck problem message, which will stop the database operation.

Using brarchive should be part of an overall backup strategy. The only way to avoid the use of brarchive is by performing another type of operating system backup that includes these files. However, using brarchive and sapdba offers some management advantages such as tape labeling control, automatic archive log finding, and recovery. For installations with lots of productive and concurrent users or with a lot of background processing, there must be a constant monitoring operation over the available space in the archive directory. You can make a simple script that checks this out, say, every half hour, and sends a warning message when available storage falls below 20 percent. There is a CCMS alert checking this. As an alternative for avoiding disk space problems, you can also use the fill tape permanently option. The SAP installations default size for the redo log files as well as the archived files is 20 MB, but this value can be changed for allowing more transactions per redo file. You must consider how many archived files can be backed up, as well as when to launch them, to calculate the devices needed. For example, suppose in the installation a full offline backup is performed every day at midnight. Normal user activity starts at 07:00 A.M. and lasts until about 20:30 P.M. A possible strategy for backing up the archives could be starting it at 12:30 P.M., then making a second copy, and finally deleting the saved logs. All these backup operations can be performed using brarchive. As an even safer strategy, you could have an automatic procedure that copies every generated archived log file to another computer as long as you control and keep the sequence exactly. As with brbackup, the brarchive utility settings are stored in the init<sid>.sap initialization profile, which must be set before you start to use it. Similarly, the tape devices to be used for the backups have to be initialized. 573

The brarchive Menu Options Normally, for backing up archives, you could use different tape devices and tape capacities than those for backing up the database, since it will normally be a much smaller volume. The SAP system and the database status is independent to perform a backup of the archive redo log files. It does not matter if they are started or stopped.
