Figure 15 33: The brarchive main menu. The menu will show the default options as configured in the init<sid>.sap initialization profile: saving the archive log files to a local tape device without compression. Change the parameters as you deem necessary. The brarchive utility writes its operations into the summary log file arch<SID>.log and, for every backup, it writes a log file with the syntax a<encoded timestamp>.<ext>. You can display these files using the Show/cleanup menu (item l). The archiving menu includes the following options: Archive function. The brarchive utility includes many different functions. A comprehensive archiving strategy will involve performing several of these functions. When selecting this function, the system will display an additional menu. On this new menu, the following archive functions are available: Save archive logs. It's the default value for normal backup of the archives that have not yet been saved. Make second copy of archive logs. Performs a second backup of the archive logs previously saved. Double save archive logs (parallel). Backs up the archive logs on two tape devices in parallel. Save and delete archive logs. Performs the normal save operation and deletes the archive files as they are saved. In this and other functions that delete archive files, the brarchive utility uses the log files to identify which files were already saved or deleted. If any offline redo log file was not successfully archived, it won't be deleted. Make second copy and delete archive logs. Performs a second copy of the archive files and then deletes them. Double save and delete archive logs. Performs the same operation as the previous option using two tape devices in parallel. 574

The brarchive Menu Options Delete saved archive logs. Deletes the archive files already saved. Delete copied archive logs. Deletes only archive files that were saved twice. Make second copy and save archive logs. Makes a second copy of already saved archive files and then saves all new archive files that have been generated in the meantime. Make second copy, delete, and save archive logs. Performs the same operation as the previous option but additionally will delete the already saved archive files. Initialize BRARCHIVE tape. Initializes one or more tapes or backup devices. The system will display a new reduced menu for selecting additional options: Check before initialization = no. If you choose not to check the label, you can initialize any tapes and even overwrite existing SAP volumes. Check label before initialization = yes. The system will check the label and only allow for initializing SAP tapes when the locking period has expired. Number of tapes. Here you can specify the number of tapes to be initialized. Show information in tape header. Shows the information contained in the tape header (volume label). Stop BRARCHIVE run with fill option. Stops a backup of archive files that was previously started using the option Continue until end of tape. Parameter file. The default file is init<DBSID>.sap, but you can create and enter here any other parameter file that can be useful for having default values when performing different backup functions. Confirm archive parameters. The default value is no, which suppresses some of the brarchive confirmation messages. When selecting yes, the system will stop and display all the confirmation messages. Then the user must confirm the function to continue. Language. You can select the language for the brarchive messages. Only English (default) and German are available. Archive device type. The system will display a list of available device types supported by brarchive. The default value is to back up the archive files to local tape devices, but you can also choose: tape_auto. Select this option for performing backups to tape devices which support automatic tape loading and switching. Selecting this option will suppress the messages for changing tapes. pipe. This option performs backups to tape devices in a remote system using commands which must be specified in the parameter initialization file. pipe_auto. It's a combination of the two preceding options. It's used to back up to an automatic tape loading and switching device located in a remote system. disk. Backing up archive files to disk is only done in exceptional cases, such as in parallel server (OPS) configurations, or in connection with a two step archiving (first to disk, then to tape). util_file and util_file_online. These are the options that allow for third party backup solutions integrated with brarchive. You must enter here the name of a third party program that must comply with the SAP backup interface program backint. Please refer to SAP for a list of certified backup partners and solutions complying with the backint interface. When using an external backup program, if necessary, you can use the Backup utility parameter file option to specify a file containing parameters needed for the external backup solution. tape_box and pipe_box are used for jukeboxes and autoloaders. In the first case (tape_box) the devices must be locally accessible; in the second case (pipe_box) they must be remotely accessible. Number of redo logs. The default value is set to 10,000 to make certain that all the archive logs are backed up. It's very unlikely an installation gets more than 10,000 archives. You can change this value to specify the number of archive files to be backed up. For example, by specifying 5, the brarchive 575

The brarchive Menu Options utility will save the five oldest archive logs. Enter password interactively. This option can be used to enter interactively or not the database administrator password. The default option is no. Query only. When selecting this option, the system displays three possibilities: no. It's the default value for starting the selected backup function. The backup will be normally started. with tape check. No backup of the archive files will be performed. The system will check and display which tape or tapes are required for the backup. The system also checks that the required tapes are mounted in the drives. without tape check. No backup of the archive files will be performed. The system will only display which tape or tapes are needed for performing the backup. Archive volume(s). You can enter here the backup volume (tape label) to be used for the backup of the archive. When none is specified, the system will use the next sequential volume as specified in the initialization profile and as recorded in the backup logs. If you need to specify more than one tape, you must separate every label with commas. However, if the archive files to be saved do not fit into a single tape, you have to start brarchive again to back up the remaining files. Compress. When selecting this option, the system will display the three possible entries: no. It's the default value for performing backups without compression. yes. Software compression is performed. When this option is used, the tool will compress the backup files into the working directory before transferring them to the backup device. hardware. Select this option for backup devices with built in hardware compression. Verification after backup. Choose whether you want the utility to perform a verification of the backed up files. The default is no. Verification will increase the total backup time. Fill tape(s) permanently. When selecting the default option no, the system will back up the specified archived files according to the archive function chosen. However, selecting yes, the brarchive utility will immediately back up new archive files as they are being generated. The process will stop when the backup device is full, when the specified number of archive files is reached, or when it is manually stopped with the archive function Stop BRARCHIVE run with fill option. Use disk backup. This option can be used for performing the backup of the archive log files that were previously copied to disk in a two step strategy. To carry out the backup of the archive logs, select the needed parameters in the menu and mount the tape or other specified device. Then, to start the backup, select the option s. While the backup of archive files is being run, the screen displays the backup size, the progress, and the estimated end time for completion. It will also display a system message when an error occurs or when the backup is finally finished. As with brbackup, the brarchive utility can also be called from the command line, which allows for writing shell scripts for automating and scheduling backups of archive files. For detailed information about the parameters and command options available with brarchive, please refer to the SAP online documentation. Following is an introduction to advanced backup facilities that were introduced in sapdba with release 4.0 and that can be used in complex scenarios and with special requirements for backup strategies. Many of these options combine both the brbackup and brarchive utilities. Specific information on available commands and use can be found on the online documentation.
