While the Partial restore and complete recovery option allowed for recovering the database up to the current time, sapdba includes other types of restore and recovery options such as restoring a full database backup; performing a point in time recovery; recovering individual missing or damaged control files, data files, or tablespaces; and others. Performing any of the available restore and recover functions will overwrite existing system files, so it's convenient to protect them with expert mode when available and it ensures that they are 585

Restoring and Recovering the Database: Further Options only performed by experienced database administrators. The next topics introduce the options in the previous menu and the functions that can be performed. Full Restore: Resetting the Database The option on the Restore/recovery menu, c Reset database (incl. redo logs and control files), can be used to completely reset the database to the state it was at the time of the corresponding full offline backup used for the restore. With this function, the system uses the brrestore utility for restoring all the database files, including the control file and the online redo log files and all the mirror copies. When selecting this function, the system presents a new menu, shown in Fig. 15 36, with three options. Depending on the option chosen, the database will be set to the status of the backup restored, or it can be further recovered.

Figure 15 36: Reset database options The system options are as follows: Restore database and startup open (no recovery possible). The system will restore the full database and open it. The database will have this status from the time the backup was performed. All database data from the time of the backup up to the time the database was last stopped is lost. No further recovery is possible. Additionally, some problems might arise regarding the archive log files sequence numbers as well as the brbackup and brarchive logs and volume initialization. After analyzing the particular situation, please refer to SAP online documentation and SAP notes for how to proceed. Restore database and startup mount (for manual recovery (using backup control file)). Using this option will restore the complete database, but it will only be mounted (not opened). Further actions will require the manual administrator intervention for recovering the database using the Oracle svrmgrl tool. A manual recovery of the full database is performed with the statement RECOVER DATABASE. The option USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE has to be used in all situations where the control file is not the current one, but a previous copy. Notice that this function with manual recovery can be performed normally with an automatic database recovery using the functions available in the sapdba menu Partial restore and complete recovery. Restore database using online consistent backups (no recovery possible). This is a similar option to the first one, and can be used for restoring a complete backup including the redo log files that were saved in the same backup volume. After the restore, the database will have the status it had when it finished the online backup that is, it will include all the redo log files that were generated while the 586

Restoring and Recovering the Database: Further Options backup was running. Full Database Restore and Recovery: Extended Options Another option under the Restore/recovery menu is primarily intended for performing point in time recovery; that is, to recover the database up to the selected time. This can be the only solution to a logical problem such as the unintentional deletion of important database data. When you know exactly at what time the deletion occurred, you can restore the database up to just before it happened. However, consider that all database data from the point of the recovery up to the current time will be lost. To access this function, select option b Full restore and recovery (excl. redo logs, control files incl. if required). The system will display a new menu as shown in Fig. 15 37.

Figure 15 37: Full restore and recovery menu options. The first thing to do is to choose option a for selecting a full database backup (brbackup) from which to perform the restore. The system will display a list of all backup runs as stored in the main backup log. Only successful backup runs can be chosen. Then select option b Recover until to specify the point in time for the recovery. The default option is now, which performs a full recovery up to the current time. Otherwise, you can specify a date and time with the format YYYY MM DD HH.MM.SS. Observe the restrictions after a partial or point in time recovery concerning the archive log sequence as well as the main sapdba logs for brarchive. Check out also whether there has been any structural changes between the time of the full online or offline backup and the point in time specified for the recovery. You can check the information about the recovery process before proceeding by selecting option c Show status. The system will display which options have been chosen and which backups and archive logs will be necessary. This option will also display any warnings or messages about whether the recovery will be possible with the specified parameters. To start the restore and recovery process, select option D Restore and recover. Again, observe that any restore process will overwrite any existing database files. The restore and recover process generates under the sapreorg directory the log files <timestamp>.rsn for recovering until now, or <timestamp>.rsp for point in time recoveries.
