This solution consists of having an additional server based on a complete offline copy from the database server. The standby database server can be located in a different building, even many miles apart, but be connected with reliable network lines. Once both servers are in the same initial state, the original database server will be constantly sending the archive redo log files or transaction logs to the standby server, which can then by applied (rolled forward) either synchronously or asynchronously so that both servers are almost in the same database situation. The only difference will be in the time it takes for the archive redo logs to be sent and then applied. With this solution, you can perform the backups in the standby server. While the backup is going on, archive redo logs cannot be applied; but once it's finished, they are all sequentially recovered. This solution presents the drawback that recovery procedures can be more difficult. Another disadvantage is that it can be costly to maintain an additional server that cannot be used for anything else. However, with this approach, you don't need to stop the original database system for backups. Additionally, this backup solution can serve the purpose of covering part of a disaster recovery situation.

Availability in a general computing sense is the period of time in which the system can be used to perform the functions for which it was designed and implemented. The opposite of availability is downtime. Downtime can be of two natures: Planned downtime. Performing offline backups, database reorganizations, and hardware upgrades Unplanned downtime. System crash, disk failure, electrical power failure, software system error, network failure; and so on. Availability is not defined as an isolated hardware or software element but as a property of the group of the system elements. For instance, even when neither the software or the server hardware presents errors but when in fact the network lines are broken, prohibiting users from performing their usual work, you have what is defined as a downtime situation. SAP project managers should clearly understand that the key measure of system availability is not the time the servers are up and running (the system manager's point of view) but rather the perception by the end users. The SAP high availability project was known as the zero downtime project, and its goal was to reduce to a minimum both planned and unplanned downtime. Performance and Tuning Basics When thinking of availability in the R/3 environment, the following factors should be considered: What are the availability needs of the business Is it 24 hours, 7 days a week (24 7) Reasons for a planned downtime: software upgrades (R/3, operating system, database). Reasons for unplanned downtime: hardware and software unexpected failures. One of the first components that has been developed by SAP hardware partners to maximize availability and minimize the unplanned downtime is the switch over systems (fail over systems) or cluster systems. These types of systems consist of a group of hardware and software elements that basically consists of: At least two servers (normally database server and application server) sharing a common group of disks. Reacting to servers, disks, or network failures: when a system crashes, the SAP services are automatically passed onto the standby server, and vice versa. The switch over system mostly works by dynamic assignment of SAP services to TCP/IP addresses using TCP/IP alias addressing facilities. A nice advantage of the switch over system is that when there is the need for hardware upgrade or service maintenance, services can be manually switched over to the other system without interrupting normal system work. You must remember that having switch over systems will require an additional SAP license, since this is attached to the network controller card of the server. SAP usually has provided this additional license free of charge when registering the switch over software and systems. Normally, each hardware vendor provides its own switch over or cluster solution, except in the case of Windows NT systems, where SAP is supporting the Microsoft Service Cluster System (MSCS).
