Once the physical network connection has been installed, some configuration work is needed to establish the actual connection and log in to the SAP support servers. Some TCP/IP network expertise is required in this process. You might need the help of your company network manager, or you can request support from SAP or the consulting partners. Normally, the server used for connecting to SAP should have two network interface cards, so that you can independently route the network traffic at your convenience. You will need to configure the TCP/IP routing and enter the hostname addresses in the hosts database. Communication between your R/3 servers and the SAP support servers is established using the TCP/IP protocol. It means that the corresponding software and host database must be defined and configured. For instance, you must define in your hosts database (usually the file /etc/hosts in the UNIX system or the file \ winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on Windows NT systems) the name of the SAP support server (sapserv<n>) assigned to your location. The name and TCP/IP address is given to you by SAP as a reply to the remote connection data sheet. Once SAP receives and processes the customer data, adding your host and TCP/IP addresses to their database, access is allowed through its firewall system (saprouter). It will send back to you the following or similar information: IP address router at SAP Technical details, such as the X.25 calling number if the connection is through X.25 lines 633

Configuring the Network Connection IP address of the sapserv<n> IP address for the X.25 interface at customers' side Figure A 1 shows a very simple diagram of the connection between a customer R/3 installation and the SAP support systems. The router at your site must be configured and the connection tested, especially between your router and the router at the SAP site. Do not confuse the router physical equipment used in wide area networks (WANs) with the SAProuter program. Then, the hosts database file must be updated to include the following addresses and hostnames: # IP router address at your site XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX <hostname> # IP SAP assigned support server address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX <hostname> The XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is substituted with the TCP/IP address. For example, 1.1.1.1. <hostname> is the name of the host as defined in your network setup. If your network is using a domain name resolving protocol such as DNS, you might not need to add the hostnames, since they will be automatically obtained from the name server. The TCP/IP address is a 32 bit address made of 4 digits (8 bits each) separated by a period. Theoretically, each address part can range from 0 to 255. According to your specific operating system network utilities, you have to configure correctly your routes; that is, you have to tell your system how to reach other parts: A typical UNIX command for adding routes is the route command. For example,

As a result of this command, you should see your newly added route. Once the systems and routers are correctly configured and SAP has recognized and added our systems, you can test if you have a physical connection to the SAP support servers by issuing a simple ping command. You should make several tests: Test the connection from your router to the SAP support server. If this test fails, it might indicate that the router is not correctly configured or your system is not yet allowed into the SAP network. Test the connection from your SAP R/3 server to your router. If this test fails, it might indicate that the routes are not correctly configured. Test the connection from your SAP R/3 server to the SAP support server. If this test fails after previous tests were completed, there may be a communication problem, or the server may not be 634

SAProuter updated in the SAP database. When issuing a command such as # ping sapserv<n> and you get the sapserv<n> is alive or similar message, then the communication between systems is working fine. If you do not get it, or the system does not respond, or you get an error message, review your procedure and contact the SAP support centers. Security issues are discussed in a following section. The next step is to configure the SAProuter program to enable the communication between your servers and the SAPnet R/3 front end system.
