where /H/ precedes the hostname and is a mandatory field. For every hostname, you can specify a TCP service name for the connection after the /S/ indicator and a password following /W/. If you do not specify these fields, the route string assumes the default values. The default service value (/S/) is 3299, and the default password (/W/) is blank (no password). Here are a couple of examples. 1. In the most simple case, as shown in Fig. A 2, a Windows PC SAPGUI client can connect to an R/3 server (server2) through an intermediate server (server1) running SAProuter. The client will use the following route string: /H/server1/H/server2/S/sapdp01.

Figure A 2: Route string from a client to a server host using SAProuter. In this example, server1 is running SAProuter using default TCP service 3299 and without a password that's why it does not have /S/ and /W/ entries; server2 is an R/3 server that is accessed at the application level using service port sapdp01. This will be the case of a SAP system number 01 in server2 with standard port sapdp01 636

Figure A 3: Route string for connecting customers' R/3 servers to SAPnet (OSS) servers with SAProuter. You can analyze the route string: The first part, /H/server1/S/sapdp99/W/my_pass, indicates the SAProuter server at your site, which is running at the default service port (could be omitted) and is password protected. The second substring, /H/sapservn/S/sapdp99, is the SAProuter running at SAP, which will finally connect you to the ossserver at service port sapdp01 using route string /H/ossserver/S/sapdp01. (Of course, this is just an example. Actual server names and service ports must be obtained by SAP official documentation and will vary depending on your geographical location.) By default, the SAProuter program uses TCP port 3299 (normally named sapdp99 in the /etc/services file) to establish an application oriented connection. SAProuter can be defined to run in the range 3200 to 3299, although SAP recommends the upper range, since the lower range normally is used by the application servers. To use a different TCP port for SAProuter, you have to start the program with the S option. In these cases, you have to make sure that the service port is defined in all route access strings. Testing SAProuter with niping You can simulate SAProuter connections using the SAP provided program called niping (network interface layer ping program). This program is located in the SAP standard runtime directory. Figure A 4 shows the system layout for the test.

Figure A 4: Testing SAProuter with niping. For this test, it is very convenient having several windows open for connecting to the three servers, for example, in a workstation, or having several telnet sessions in your Windows environment. You can simulate the whole process using a single server by running the programs in the background. In the preceding example, server1 is running the SAProuter program; server2 is simulating a SAP application 637

Setting Up SAProuter server; and server3 is establishing a connection to server2 using server1 as the router. First of all, start the SAProuter program in server1. To do that, log in as user <sid>adm (you can also start it as root, but then you have to write the whole path to the program) and start the program by issuing the following command:
