Figure A 9: Example of technical settings configuration for OSS1. These parameters automatically define a route between a client system (such as a Windows PC) and the SAPnet R/3 front end system. Users, however, do not need to enter such a route; they can enter the SAPnet R/3 front end as long as it can access the mazda system and have authorization for using SAPnet R/3 front end. The permission route string would look like the following:

Normally, the remote connections from customer systems to SAP support servers using official Internet addresses create some form of security concerns, which is perfectly understandable. Customers at first do not like the idea very much, although they do like the benefits of the remote online services. After discussing the security issues, a large majority of, if not all, customers will finally set up the remote connection. These are the security issues to take into consideration: Enforce your firewall system restrictions by the available software and also by defining access lists in the physical routers. Normally, connections are established from customers' systems to SAP support servers using outgoing only circuits. This means that it's the customer who opens the connection; then, SAP can access your system using the open channel. Create an access permission routing table and assign permission only to specific SAProuters. Assign passwords to the allowed routes. Only the SAP support servers are directly connected to customer systems and vice versa. SAP has implemented the following security measures at its end: All types of operating system access are disabled, except for anonymous ftp. Access is restricted both with SAP firewall and SAProuter. Only specific persons are allowed to maintain the SAP support servers. SAP telnet sessions to the customer system are supported using the SAProuter software, as long as the customer opens the telnet service connection and provides SAP personnel with a 641

Remote Connection Security Issues user and a password. No direct Internet access is available at SAP servers. You can monitor the remote connections by checking the SAProuter log file and using the Monitor System monitoring User overview function from the administration menu. You can use the echo mode in your session to monitor the consultants' activities. You can create R/3 user master records for SAP specialists on demand and delete them right after the session; or you can manually lock the user until the next session. You can always activate and deactivate the remote connections using the service connection functions within the SAPnet R/3 front end. Within this function, you can even set a time limit on the connection.

When a company decides to implement the SAP R/3 system to manage business critical data, it usually does not start from a no data situation. Normally, a SAP R/3 project comes in to replace or complement existing applications which do not cover actual business needs or applications that become functionally and/or technologically obsolete as the business demands evolve and grow. In the process of replacing current applications and transferring application data, two situations might occur: The first is when application data to be replaced is transferred at once, and only once. The second situation is to transfer data periodically from external systems to SAP and vice versa. There is a period of time when information has to be transferred from existing applications to SAP R/3, and often this process will be repetitive. During the implementation of a SAP R/3 system, some of the important issues to plan and design for are Treating the existing historical and master data in the systems which are to be replaced Establishing a data communication and transfer policy between the SAP R/3 system and other external and operative information systems SAP R/3 includes sufficient mechanisms to handle both issues and for allowing the data interchange between the SAP systems and other information systems. From the available and increasing number of methods, the batch input has been and still is the most popular and widely used. The use of batch input procedures to enter data in the SAP database has the following features: Can process large data volumes in batch Can be planned and submitted in the background Can be processed automatically, without human intervention Uses standard SAP transactions, just as if the data was manually entered The data load using batch input procedures is accomplished in two stages. In the first stage, the functional analysis and the programming permits filtering and generating the data which will later be loaded into the SAP database (generation of batch input session); the second stage has to do with the administration of the data load processes, that is, the management of the batch input sessions. Among the tasks of the R/3 system administrator, daily checking of batch input can be of major importance. The system includes many utilities which will help in the management, monitoring, and control of the batch input sessions. To call the initial screen for the available utilities for batch input management, select System Services Batch input Edit, or, alternatively, enter transaction code SM35 in the command field. Figure B 1 shows this initial screen.
